Even with the rule changes I reckon the 2005 swans team would give the 2008 swans team a pasting. (taking same players against each other in their form of 2005 v 2008). Ball would kill Everitt, Williams would run rings through the centre.
    Ah such sweet, sweet memories.....

Especially after Willo was pretty much punted out the door by Collingwood in favour of Buckley.

The point about 2005 Swans killing the 2008 version is very true. It's been fascinating over the past few weeks to see that even the slower version of Crouch still has that ability to turn the ball towards a run straight down the centre as he and Williams used to do. Even Eski tends to go wide compared to those two.

Fond memories - being at the Gabba (in 2003?) when the lowly Swans were playing the all-conquering Lions and held a close lead in the final minutes when Willo (playing some significant game for him - 200?) took off through the middle and kicked the final, sealing goal of the match. I was still smiling a week later - and again now as I recall it.

I think Longmire is one of the best credentialed in the league to take over. Who else would people suggest .
Roos was assistant to Eade for 1 or 2 seasons only, and the assistants under Eade had no where near the clout that Horse has. For Roos to leave him in charge all off season/pre season and then leave him in the box on game day shows these guys are on the same page. And it's a fair prediction that things under Horse won't change much. As for him being the best credentialed, well StKilda, Melbourne, Essendon, Freo and Gold Coast , obviously don't think so.

Prehaps it is time for Roos to step aside rather than be pushed, no matter what sport you are coaching at a elite level their is going to come a point when you are seen as stagnating in ideas.

Longmire might be on the same page as Roos and therefore he knows what Roos is thinking on gameday, but that doesn't mean Longmire has the same coaching ideas as Roos. Let him prove himself as a senior coach first before writting him off. After all who would of thought that Essendon would of replaced Sheedy with a member of his own coaching set up last season?

And it's a fair prediction that things under Horse won't change much.
Fair as in, "well he is second in charge so he must not think in change". You don't know that and you can't predict that.

As for him being the best credentialed, well StKilda, Melbourne, Essendon, Freo and Gold Coast , obviously don't think so.
St Kilda went for him, up until Robert Walls personally asked Ross Lyon to get involved in the process and thus Lyon had the job in the bag from that point. Melbourne and the Gold Coast were the only open market jobs available (the Essendon and Fremantle job went to insiders anyway) until this year and Longmire didn't even apply because he had the Swans job to look forward to when Roos left the Swans, so that doesn't prove anything.

Have read every post here and IMO i think starting a new year/pre season with an injection of new coach and putting our old war horses to pasture and some smart draft dealing and players from the reserves then maybe just maybe we will have a half decent year next year...this year in principle is over and done so lets start thinking NEXT YEAR........

                    stick with roos next year

he has been criticised here and elsewhere for persisting with a favourite set of players and a gameplan that i) others have dissected to death and defeated and ii) his ageing squad is no longer capable of consistently performing. some have said he is a one-trick pony unable to see clear of past success, but it is possible that he is more conscious and deliberate than that and has given his old players (and by his stated creed he puts the players first) a last chance to perform in the manner that he thinks they can perform best.

what is unknown is how roos would approach afl with the next incarnation of the sydney swans. he has already proven himself able to master through tactics a period of football very different from that in which he played most of his career. his coaching game did not reflect the tactics that dominated his experience as a player (eg dominant forwards, positional play, purely stopping backmen, head-to-head midfielders) so why should it be assumed that he is not capable of drafting, trading, training, selecting and coaching a team that is able to succeed in the new domain of lower contact and freer play by the faster and fitter players that we have today.

we have a coach that is proven as being of the very best. without doubt he has good competition in thompson and laidley with others like ratten just starting to show something of themselves, but none of the other young coaches better roos' record over the last five years.

he deserves, if he wishes it, a shot at a new approach with a new group. i for one firmly hopes he takes it if offered.

if not roos, then we should have an open search for the next best in the land. maybe longmire is it, but we should not just go for him because of anybody's preconception.
then again, i think it would be worth trying 15-16 players on field so what would i know

If it is time for Roos to go then we should not look at horse IMHO but make a completely fresh start - Horse is integral to planning, match day tactics, training etc. Last thing we would want "if" Roos goes is a Roos clone.

Mathews may be available after Roos this would be a fresh approach.

                      Cheers

If any of these clubs were interested in Horse, he would of been contacted and put in the mix. Assistant coaches looking for senior jobs don't pick and choose, that's what the clubs do. Supply and demand dictates that.

This post would have been busy had we lost against Lions....

And, yes, Leigh is available (if he wants). Not a good fit to current Swans but.
Prob needs a rest, not a challange.
