The point about 2005 Swans killing the 2008 version is very true. It's been fascinating over the past few weeks to see that even the slower version of Crouch still has that ability to turn the ball towards a run straight down the centre as he and Williams used to do. Even Eski tends to go wide compared to those two.
Fond memories - being at the Gabba (in 2003?) when the lowly Swans were playing the all-conquering Lions and held a close lead in the final minutes when Willo (playing some significant game for him - 200?) took off through the middle and kicked the final, sealing goal of the match. I was still smiling a week later - and again now as I recall it.Comment

I dont know why everyone assumes that Longmire will not bring in any changes. Most assistant coaches have some say but the overall plans and strategies are lead by the head coach no matter how much he says its a caring sharing environment.
Roos was an assistant coach to eade and the game styles changed as soon as he took over. I think it is very shortsighted to believe that just because he is on the coaching staff means that we will get same old same old if Longmire was to takeover.
I think Longmire is one of the best credentialed in the league to take over. Who else would people suggest .Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MTComment

Prehaps it is time for Roos to step aside rather than be pushed, no matter what sport you are coaching at a elite level their is going to come a point when you are seen as stagnating in ideas.Premiers 09,18,33,05

And it's a fair prediction that things under Horse won't change much.
As for him being the best credentialed, well StKilda, Melbourne, Essendon, Freo and Gold Coast , obviously don't think so.Once was, now elsewhereComment

Have read every post here and IMO i think starting a new year/pre season with an injection of new coach and putting our old war horses to pasture and some smart draft dealing and players from the reserves then maybe just maybe we will have a half decent year next year...this year in principle is over and done so lets start thinking NEXT YEAR........Comment

stick with roos next year
he has been criticised here and elsewhere for persisting with a favourite set of players and a gameplan that i) others have dissected to death and defeated and ii) his ageing squad is no longer capable of consistently performing. some have said he is a one-trick pony unable to see clear of past success, but it is possible that he is more conscious and deliberate than that and has given his old players (and by his stated creed he puts the players first) a last chance to perform in the manner that he thinks they can perform best.
what is unknown is how roos would approach afl with the next incarnation of the sydney swans. he has already proven himself able to master through tactics a period of football very different from that in which he played most of his career. his coaching game did not reflect the tactics that dominated his experience as a player (eg dominant forwards, positional play, purely stopping backmen, head-to-head midfielders) so why should it be assumed that he is not capable of drafting, trading, training, selecting and coaching a team that is able to succeed in the new domain of lower contact and freer play by the faster and fitter players that we have today.
we have a coach that is proven as being of the very best. without doubt he has good competition in thompson and laidley with others like ratten just starting to show something of themselves, but none of the other young coaches better roos' record over the last five years.
he deserves, if he wishes it, a shot at a new approach with a new group. i for one firmly hopes he takes it if offered.
if not roos, then we should have an open search for the next best in the land. maybe longmire is it, but we should not just go for him because of anybody's preconception.then again, i think it would be worth trying 15-16 players on field so what would i knowComment

If it is time for Roos to go then we should not look at horse IMHO but make a completely fresh start - Horse is integral to planning, match day tactics, training etc. Last thing we would want "if" Roos goes is a Roos clone.
Mathews may be available after Roos this would be a fresh approach.
Cheers

St Kilda went for him, up until Robert Walls personally asked Ross Lyon to get involved in the process and thus Lyon had the job in the bag from that point. Melbourne and the Gold Coast were the only open market jobs available (the Essendon and Fremantle job went to insiders anyway) until this year and Longmire didn't even apply because he had the Swans job to look forward to when Roos left the Swans, so that doesn't prove anything.Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect...
