History of Bulldogs vs Swans matches at the M.C.G.

Interesting bit of trivia this, the bulldogs and the swans have only played once before against each other at the M.C.G. It was in 1997 in a qualifying final. I just think that considering how long the swans/south melbourne and the western bulldogs/footscray have been in the AFL/VFL, this is pretty amazing that they have only ever once before played one another there. For the record the scores were 119 to 84, Bulldogs win, they jumped to a 9 goal to 0 start in the first quarter and the swans actually outscored them in the next 3 quarters but i guess its safe to say they gave them a bit too much head start.

And that game was on early due to the television coverage of Princess Diana's funeral.

Dogs have won just 6 from 13 games at the G in the past 3 years. So they're neither experienced or overly successful at the ground.

We've only played at the MCG once this season, the loss to Hawthorn.

Was at that game...... Top of the Southern stand.... So high that when the ball came along to the outer wing, the players actually disappeared from view....

            The memories...

I have read this site on and off for a long time, but its the memories of that day at the 'G which prompt me to join in.

It was days after the death of Princess Di and teams observed a minute's silence during which one 'Dogs fan called out "F... you Plugger, you fat b......d!" Or words to that effect, which reverberated around the whole stadium.

We were absolutely smashed in the first quarter. Jose Romero and Libber were at the peak of their cheating powers. Earlier in that season - at Princes Park - Paul Kelly was forced off the ground with bleeding gouge marks down his face from Libber. The incident happened right in front of all the Swans members and we let the filthy pig have it too that day.

Anyway back to the QF, they were back at it again and the umps seemed completely oblivious. A group sitting by us without any allegiance to either side were howling abuse at the umpires for their treatment of the Swans that day.

Outside the ground afterwards, the Bulldogs fans were as bad as Magpies fans once were at Victoria Park or Eagles supporters at Subiaco early in 2006 for the GF rematch.

It's interesting to have watched the swing from the Bulldogs being our arch nemesis - you could hardly say their name without spitting 10 years ago - to the Eagles.

Both teams have almost completely changed their lists since then, certainly the main offenders from the Western Oval have moved on. Nonetheless I still can't stand them. Do others still feel the same?

I drove down for that game.

Sat there shell shocked, we were absolutely blown away. Went back to our hotel room and watched the funeral on TV. It was a pretty ordinary day

Went to the MCG the next day to watch the ressies play (from memory v Collingwood) as the curtain raiser to Roos v Cats. Ran into Greg Harris (Chairman of Selectors) and he was serious when he said that it would be better if the Roos won because we would be lucky to put a team on the field should we not be eliminated. Cressa did his knee in the Bulldog game, I think Kelly and about 3 others had no hope of coming up the following week as well. The Roos beat Geelong and we were out as the second lowest ranking loser.

Started to drive back, was knackered so pulled into a motel in Albury. Woke early the next morning and watched Rafter win the US Open. At last something went right, so I drove home.

I know exactly how you feel. Bulldogs were the hated team for me as a Swans supporter in the 90's. Probably even more so than Collingwood or Nth Melbourne. And all because of that dirty little squirrel gripping @@@@, Libber.

This year I find myself cheering for them. If we can't take the flag, I'd happily watch the Doggies win it over Geelong or Collingwood...

Due to Libber and the filthy tactics that a-hole Wallace encouraged his players to use I too hated the Dogs until Eade took over as coach.

                    Re: 1997

I had seats about 20 rows back right between the goal posts at the punt rd end. The sun was shining, and I expected Plugger to kick 10.

It was not a good day.

I feel exactly the same way! Even now after all these years and even though my mum and her family support them and my company sponsors them and Eade is coach, I just can't find myself liking them.

I remember in 1997 when they played the Crows in the Prelim Final, I was there and I was actually barracking for the Crows!

was groomsman for a wedding at Montsalvat that day. thankfully wasn't there to see us get belted. was a pretty good day in the end...nothing like drinking copious amounts of grog somebody else has paid for and being a dyck to get over a hideous day. couldn't believe Rocket left Bubba to run around on Dunkers... surely whack him up to CHB and send back a midsizer to take smith out...someone like Roos? Or Luffy?

I too was at that game.

Took my 6 month old son which was pretty stupid.
We were on the first level (can't remember which stand) but the crowd echoed something rotten.
I spent most of the game trying to sort him out which was in hindsight probably a good thing as I missed most of the match.

I still tell friends that story, i was at the game as well. when i tell the story some bloke yelled out "hey lockett ... you're fat" ... but that is how i remember it ... was very funny.

all went down hill after that.
