He had observed that people who did lie were, on the whole, more resourceful and ambitious and successful than people who did not lie. -
And my god, look what happened to Tim Watson. Started as a 15 year old and was plagued by injury over his 307 game career. Chris Grant was another who suffered. His knee reconstruction in 2005 can be directly traced back to 1988 when he played his first game at age 17 years.
Playing these young guys is just frought with danger! He had observed that people who did lie were, on the whole, more resourceful and ambitious and successful than people who did not lie.Comment

Very disappointed we didn't draft Rhys O'Keefe and Nathan O'Keefe, and they were only a few draft picks away..."In some ways we?re less predictable to ourselves and sometimes that can be detrimental because we don?t really know where we?re going" - P.RoosComment

For every Watson and Grant, there are about 20 Doyles and Fitzgeralds. And have Watson and Grant been remembered principally for the incredible footy they played at 18yoa or younger? And my god, look what happened to Tim Watson. Hang on, are we typing about the merits of playing younger recruits on the team, or their increased propensity of injury from doing so? The former warrants discussion, the latter is silly. He had observed that people who did lie were, on the whole, more resourceful and ambitious and successful than people who did not lie.Comment

Mark Bayes played on a wing before he became one of the premier CHB as did David Rhys Jones, Dennis carroll, Dick Clay (Rich) at FB etc etc. It's a good place to start them when their bodies are not sufficiently developed for the smashing they get as a KPPThose who have the greatest power to hurt us are those we love.Comment

Valid players indeed to back up your argument. But is our young lad the type who would be suited to the wing? He may be mobile and move through the forward line nicely, but so does Barry Hall and he certainly isn't suited to the wing.
The other thing we need to consider is; the game has changed, what was valid back then is not necessarily a smart thing to do today.
Rhys Jones was started as winger and I doubt he was going to be groomed as a back man. Ditto for Carroll - they worked out he was more a straight ahead player so moved him back. Bayes was natural winger but later developed into a utility who could play a KP forward or back. Clay played his very best footy on the wing and was moved back later in his career.Comment

I thought we looked to the future well by going for a marking forward and the two seventeen year olds.Clearly it is going to be difficult to pick up good blokes next year when Gold Coast start taking there picks so I thought we were very wise in our choices.Comment
