    2008 Troy Luff Medal Count

Welcome to the 2008 TLM Vote Count.

Over the next few weeks relive the highs and the lows of the 2008 Swans season.

    TLM Rules:
Playing Votes are cast by you after each game, including finals.
The top 5 vote scoring players each round score TLM votes, in the order of 5, 4, 3, 2, 1,
Players who tie, receive the points equivalent to their positioning in that round.
At the end of all Rounds the Player with the highest votes wins the coveted TLM, pretty tricky stuff.
The winning player is presented with an album containing the vote count and game summary, and congratulation messages from you guys.

    Previous winners(With total Votes) are
    2002 - Paul Williams(47)
    2003 - Adam Goodes(62)

Round 1 v St Kilda, Telstra Dome.

BEST: McVeigh, Buchanan, Kennelly, C.Bolton, Jack

In a lack lustre game, that ebbed and flowed, the reigning pre-season premiers played the guaranteed round 1 pre-season loser.
The Saints opened the scoring within 30 seconds, and continued on quickly to open a 20-0 lead. The swans managed a single goal in the first qtr. The Swans turned the tables and tuned a 20 point deficit into a tied game at halftime, by holding the saints to just 3 behinds. In the 3rd term the tables turned again and it was the Saints who scored, holding the swans to only 4 behinds. You'd think a gale was blowing to the scoring end, but alas the game was indoors. Again, in a baffling turn, the saints were again kept goalless for the 2nd time, and only for some poor kicking for goal, the Saints hung on for a 2 point win. Moore had a chance to seal the game with seconds left only to see his snap sail through for a behind.

Round 2 v Port Adelaide, SCG.

Best: Hall, O'Keefe, O'Loughlin, McVeigh, Mattner, C Bolton, Buchanan

The swans get the first goal of the game to new boy Jack, only to let Port slide back into the game with 3 kick goals. It took the unlikely heroes of LRT(goal from the boundary line) and Bevan(great pack mark and goal), to get the SS Swans back in the straight. The Swans the got on a wave of goals, kicking 16 goals to 7for the next 3 qtrs to blow Port out of the park and win by 68 points.
5 goals to Hall and 4 to O'Loughlin.

      Round 3 v Brisbane, Gabba.

BEST: O'Keefe, Kirk, Hall, McVeigh, Kennelly, Goodes, C Bolton

It was a game where the swans led all night, but could never shake of the dogged lions.
Kirk was in total command in the midfield and, with help from Ablett, Jack and Bird, successfully blanketed the

Lions? experienced ball winners. O'Keefe topped the possession count.

Round 4 v West Coast, ANZ Stadium.

BEST: O'Keefe, Jack, O'Loughlin, Kennelly, Jolly

Big win. Big rivalry. Bigger hit.
This game will long be remembered for all wrong reasons.
A game many swans supporters wanted to win, against a team that has given many heart thumping finishes over the last few years. But the heart thumping started near the end of the 1st term when Hall's brain farted. How many weeks for THAT hit?? Followed by the arm snap against the Stadium Fence.
The game itseld was one that we wouldn't forget. Smacking the eagles is always a pleasureable experience. And with a 6 goal lead at half time, only got better when the swans kicked another 8 goals to 3.12, to send the eagles spiralling to the bottom of the ladder, with a Staker through the heart.
      O'loughlin kicked 4 goals.

You obviously didn't get to experience the TLM count when Charlie was doing it. This is fast in comparison. No disrespect to Charlie but he did drag it out, felt like he covered a round a week and didn't start doing the count until November.

Round 5 v Geelong, Skilled Stadium.

BEST: Jolly, McVeigh, Mattner, Kirk, Moore

The unstoppable cats were next. No Hall, no Kennelly made the task look that much harder.
After a slow start the Cats kicked into gear and started finding the goals, while the swans could only manage one major to Jude Bolton after a sublime pass from O'Loughlin. 5 goal deficit at qtr time, in near perfect conditions, the signs were ominous. However, the dogged determination of the swans ot them back in the game to only trail by 7 points at half time.
The third term was an arm wrestle. with the cats keeping the swans in the game with some wayward kicking. 1.5 to 1.2.
The 4th qtr was where G Ablett finally showed his class with a match winning qtr, leaving young Jack in his wake.
              42 point loss.

Round 6 v Kangaroos, Telstra Dome.

BEST: Goodes, Kirk, O?Keefe, Bevan, O?Loughlin, Moore

After a flying start, a goal to Jolly in the first minute the game became an armwrestle with neither side giving an inch.
By half time the lead had been cut from 13 points to a single goal. Moore was in much of the play, setting up many of the few goal opportunities. The roos hit the lead in the 3rd term and didn't want to surrender it. A couple of quick goals and the swans were looking for answers. Kennelly provided that spark with a bustling run which led to an O'Loughlin goal. Many chances were squandered including the Kirk, touched on the line goal, behind. The scores are then level with minutes to go.
And that is how the scores remained. A draw. 2 points. $50,000 fine (1/2 suspended), and the Jesse White Rule is introduced.

On 'Before the Bounce' on Friday night, Jason Dunstall highlighted this exact game as the anomoly that proves the Brownlow is the 'Midfielders Medal'.

He replayed Roos' post match interview after Rd5 which said in as many words "Their best player, Ablett, had a great game and our best, Goodes, had a poor game, that ultimately proved the difference" He really did criticise Goodes' game.

Dunstall then questioned Goodes' 2 votes in light or Roos' comments.

If the TLM results were available to Dunstall he may have made mention that Sydneys own fans had him 10th best on the field FOR SYDNEY, not counting the 17-18 Cat players who were probably better.

Clearly the votes he got for the Geelong game were a complete anomoly, though I don't think the umpies being quite that far off is typical. He probably got votes in other games where it was arguable that other players deserved them more but none so riduculous as that game.

In most cases, players who get votes generally were pretty good. And in probably every case the player who eventually wins had a darned good season.

McVeigh helped get Sydney off to a good start with 2 goals in the first 10 minutes. Playfair got his first got for his new side, and the swans lead by 15 points at qtr time. The Dogs came out after some Rodney angry pills, and took hold of the game kicking 7.1 to 1.1. The swans fought back, in the 2nd half but were never really in the game. and went down by 3 goals.

BEST: Kirk, O'Loughlin, Moore, Jolly, Barry, Playfair, Goodes

A game that the swans were expected to win, and they did, emphatically.
The bombers defence was virtually non existant, as the swans forwards and backs did as they pleased.
The swans desperation was shown by Bevan, who firstly tackled 2 players at once, as he didn't know which one had the ball, and then a crunching rugby style tackle on Monfries. Goals were shared, but O'Loughlin bagged 6, Playfair and Jolly 3 a piece. Except for some wayward kicking the margin could easily have reached the 100 mark, but we were satisfid with a 15 goal to 3 2nd half, after the bombers put up some fight in the 2nd term.

The strange draw brought us up against Port Adelaide again for the 2nd time within 7 games.
The game was a little more even than the previous contest. Little more then 2 goals separated the 2 teams for most of the game, and the swans finally running out winners by 11 points. Mattner made what may have been a match winning tackle to stop a Port attack, but the final pieces fell into place when Moore marked surrounded by Port players only to burst forward and goal, Schimdt and Mcveigh then iced the cake.
                              3 goals to Moore

Always a danger game against the unpredictable Tigers, but the Tiges brought there B game and were outclassed.
The swans almost held the Tiges scoreless until young gun Crotchin broke the drought.
Goodes had a 2 minute burst of brilliance snaring the ball out of the centre bounce twice, firstly setting up O'Loughlin for a goal, then doing the job all by himself, beating several would be tacklers.
The second half was a little more competitive, but the game was already over, 21 goals and a 70 point thumping.
Buchanan, McVeigh, O'Loughlin all finished with 3 goals.
