The Weekend Australian Oct 4-5
Don't know how to do that link thing, but Patrick Smith in his piece is as far as I know the first journo to publicly state:
"the West Coast premiership of 2006 is regarded as an inferior triumph, no matter that is was won by a point in a gripping and memorable match. It is not what the Eagles did but what they did not. it has been established there was an illicit drug culture at the club. West Coast coach John Worsfold later admitted as many as seven players had told him they had used banned substances."
..... it might have gained a pemiership cup but it has lost something quite pricelss - its good name and reputation.
Thus an asterisk sits by the club's name, 2006 - West Coast* (when winning was everything and nothing else counted). Then he goes on to talk about the unscrupulous tactics of the Melbourne Storm.
Not a bad read to end the season on....
