The West Coast Premiership Of 2006

    The Weekend Australian Oct 4-5
Don't know how to do that link thing, but Patrick Smith in his piece is as far as I know the first journo to publicly state:

"the West Coast premiership of 2006 is regarded as an inferior triumph, no matter that is was won by a point in a gripping and memorable match. It is not what the Eagles did but what they did not. it has been established there was an illicit drug culture at the club. West Coast coach John Worsfold later admitted as many as seven players had told him they had used banned substances."

..... it might have gained a pemiership cup but it has lost something quite pricelss - its good name and reputation.
Thus an asterisk sits by the club's name, 2006 - West Coast* (when winning was everything and nothing else counted).
Then he goes on to talk about the unscrupulous tactics of the Melbourne Storm.

Not a bad read to end the season on....
"He was proud of us when we won and he was still proud of us when we lost' Tami Roos about Paul Sept 06.

The same Patrick Smith who claimed the AFL should ban/kick out West Coast for up to three years?

That article is poor journalism from start to finish. The editors must be blind to let something of that standard through.

He contradicts himself when he says that Melbourne decided that the good name of the NRL and the judiciary can take a hammering and at the end of the article he says:

The NRL centenary year has been pock-marked and blemished with controversy from beginning to end. It has not built to a crescendo but a shame.
I seem to remember that the last few seasons have been "pock-marked and blemished" for the NRL. Go back to Canterbury's exercise in breaching the salary cap and misadventures in Coffs Harbour as an example.

I won't forget that we were cheated out of the 2006 premiership. We have been in 13 GF's and won 4 in our history. Carlton won in 1945 but their premiership will be forever tainted for their thuggery (sure the swans beleted theri fair share but history shows Carlton deliberately started it).

Premierships are special - So we should always condemn the circumstances of how West Coast won the '06 premiership.

Much as I would like to agree that we lost the 2006 GF because West Coast were on drugs, that is clearly not true. I was there and I have watched the DVD of the game again since then, and the reason we lost is because we threw it away in the first half by bad goal kicking etc. We could have won by at least three goals except for that.

Of course it's not true. WC on drugs don't account for us playing like idiots in the first half. WC on drugs don't account for them stopping on the second half and if it did then it certainly didn't help them. Time to get over it and quite the whinging.
