I would be interested to know how the Shaw family are thinking right now.

A total of 6 members of the family have been listed with Collingwood, playing a total of 667 between the 6 of them. To date no Shaw has ever played for another club in the AFL.

Brothers: Ray (146 games), Tony (a club record 313 games), Neville (43 games).
Ray's sons: Rhyce (94 games) and Heath (71 games)
Tony's son: Bryden (a listed player from 2003 to 2005)

The 'quality' part of his game does not extend to hitting targets, especially forwards on the lead.

He takes up another place on the list, meaning we have to cut an extra youngster. Now we have yet another bloke who is coming towards the end of his career.

And remember he isn't that good.

It's like the latest Ebert playing for the Eagles instead of Port. I reckon it could be a good thing to get him away from the expectation of being a Shaw with the pies and doing his own thing.

I am hoping that he won't become a player at the swans that continually makes me shake my head in frustration - cause I thought that he played that way at the pies - but am happy to give him a fresh start so that he can prove my doubts wrong.

I imagine that he will have a running role off half-back (perhaps the wing) like Eski - will be interesting to see how he it goes.

I think it best that I deem the club knows what its needs are and, what its subsequent recruiting strategy is.

I also think it best that I do not think that I (and my fellow supporters) know more or, have a better clue, than the club does.

Others may beg to differ, that is the landscape of the typical fan/supporter forum.

It is all good.

As for Shaw, he was asking to be traded last year. A new club away from (what would be horrendous) family pressure may be all he needs to shine.

I'm looking forward to my son writing Shaw's name on his 2009 football and, chasing a Shaw signature for his 2009 jumper (paying for the jumper is a separate issue).

If it means a youngster gets cut that has had an opp to make it and hasnt. who cares. At least we know he can perform at Afl level for us for the next 4-5 years and cost us nothing. Hes no champ but he will make our best 22 IMHO

He's actually not a terrible player - but I struggle to see where he fits in our best 22. Who moves on? Not exactly the quantumleap forward this squad was looking for.

If I had to get a rundown on any Collingwood player that I know would be a fair and unbiased opinion as well as accurate, I would ask this particular bloke from web-land, well known to DoctorJ, Reggi and myself. Here is his assessment:

Disadvantages:
* Poor disposal - butchers the ball, sometimes takes a nothing choice.
* Hopeless overhead.
* No physical capability (to out-position, out-maneuver a player).
* Fumbles - accentuated under pressure.

Advantages:
* Very fast. Will be the fastest at Sydney, (and one of the quickest in the league).
* Not afraid to take them on, breaks lines.
* Runs and runs and runs - will keep presenting long after everybody's dropped.

Feel Rhyce is somewhat maligned. I think he's one of those players that Madhouse didn't cultivate well due to an apprenticeship at half-back which seemed to make Rhyce nervous and indecisive. Doesn't have the greatest composure, and the closer you get to the opposition's goals the worse it is.

Found a niche this year as a run-with midfielder, and did some good tagging jobs. Have always thought that he'd be great as a purely offensive player.

Kicking is problematic. Have often thought his bigger concern is not that he butchers the ball, but that he's caught between two minds: do the instinctive thing; or do the purely team-oriented, allegedly low-risk thing - he often gets caught in-between.

Won't be your worst pick-up, and think the drop in draft from 46 to 61 is negligible.


The interesting part for me, or the part that fills me with hope is the run-with aspect.

McVeigh has obviously lifted a notch or ten this year when he has been released to play an offensive role and I have said from day 1 that Kieran Jack will be a terrific offensive mid who has been thrown into tagging roles as a learning experience more than a pre-cursor to the role he will play in future years.

If Shaw can run with the oppositions super quick mids, a role that Ablett, B1 and Kirky are incapable of playing, it still leaves McV and Kizza as offensive mids.

Put me down as satisfied with the trade.

He's 27; that surprised me and I can only see him as a top up player.

That's interesting - would place pressure on Ablett which is no bad thing. Luke needs to step up or move on IMO.

Thanks for that Triple. Didn't realise he was that fast. We do need more pace. He sounds like a Willo without the beautiful boot. I am also seeing a Rhys v Daisy clash when we meet the maggots. Maybe our lad will belt him. Shaw v Cocksure.
