Three Captains

But what are all these "distractions" caused by having three captains, a leadership group?
(BTW, is there any AFL club nowadays that doesn't have a "leadership group"?)
I am in the camp that sees Kirk as the outstanding on-field leader at the club, but I don't really see the big deal of having 3 named captains. I don't really see what the downside is, or is perceived to be. And if the club sees some positives from it, what is the problem?Comment

I prefer to just keeping it simple - one captain and thats it. I have never been a fan of the leadrship group (as you all know) - which has 3 captains and 5 others. Too many chiefs and too much "us" and "them" .
I can see Roos next innovation for 2009 is that everyone will get a go at being captain - so there will be 22 - one for each round.I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure..................

I think there are so many off field responsibilities for the captain extra meeting, media, corportate stuff etc. If you can split all that between 3 guys it gives the captains more time for recovery and more time to spend focusing on their most important role that is playing good footy as well as some time for themselves.
You often have captains give up the role because its too much extra stuff and they want to focus on their footy.
Once you get on the field we all know who the true leader of the club is anyway Captain Kirk.Comment

For others to help with all the off field stuff that can no doubt be extremely draining for a 31 year old sole captain.Comment

Swans being the originators of the idea, have it right!
Peers! that can interchange with the modern demands of duty.
Hell anyone who saw 2005 2006 2007 2008 knows Kirk has earnt the (internal) "above the rest" status. But does he need the extra pressure (particularly on an off day) to do all the media, as a target?
He already carried us through 08 on field as it was!Comment

A captain is not just about on-field leadership (which I agree Kirky is amazing at this (also helps he plays in the midfield) but it is also about off-field leadership and obviously C Bolton and Leo are very good at this as well and very respected by the other players. I like the idea of 3 captains - for what one may lack the other makes up for. Sometimes i do think Kirky can get a bit carried away with all the "bloods" culture etc.Comment
