Actually his contract said he owed us one more season. But its only a legally binding promise. Great bloke Tadhg

i doubt you've read his contract. in regards to his obligations, i'm pretty sure it would have had clauses preventing him playing afl in australia at any level with any other club but not much more than that. the rest would have been stuff like protecting his right to medical treatment and care, conditions of pay and ways in which he could be penalised for sub-par performance and behavoir. i'd like to know what exactly you think was so enforceable, in both theoretical and practical senses. in that, i mean extending your argument beyond assertions, outrage and other bluster.
again, do you wish he'd made a decision before he was sure and had the benefit of three months recovery and medical advice? perhaps you'd rather he played on when he no longer had the desire or confidence in his body to do so?
the timing is regrettable and the way it was done was a bit rude but i think he made the right decision and the response from the club has been appropriate, responsible and dignified.
he's retired from afl like many before him. get over it.

Yes they should. If they're not sure, better to pull the pin when it doesn't effect the clubs list that afterwards when it could have a big impact.

Why should he be different to anyone else in a "regular" job? His first priority is to look after himself. You are a long time retired, as they say, and you would want to be very very sure before pulling the plug.

Fact is, we don't know the full story. We don't know the contents of the contract - as someone else mentioned, it probably has clauses preventing him for playing for any other AFL club for the duration of the contract.

As for the timing... that is more a courtesy than a legally binding thing. Sure, it would have been nice if it was before the drafts so we could fill up the list - however there may have been salary cap considerations and as I said before - he would want to be super-sure before deciding to quit.

I understand what you are saying Des, however, as a Swans fan, all I care about is the club. It may sound mercenary, but I really don't care how long a player is going to be retired, after all he has only retired from professional sport, not from doing real work. What I care about is how the retirement may effect the clubs chances this year.

I wonder if the club will seek to recover the costs for all the medical proceedures he had late last year - I mean - he really would have made this decision 6 months ago (know what I'm saying???), so the club fixed him up at their expense, and he says at the begining of the new year "see ya's"! (just my devious, cynical mind working there!)

i think they have insurance effectively covering them for life for any ongoing treatment for football related injuries.
