I only got to see the first half Goodes looked the Goodes, just the player that he is, which luckily enough is extremely good.

The thing that struck me though was Jarrad McVeigh he just looked a cut above the rest (except maybe Goodes). Every one on one he won and then used it well. From what i saw expect an even better year than last year from the man.

I thought Barlow was rubbish and awkward but he kicked a couple in the second half that i didnt see.

From today it seems the future forward line will be Moore, Vez, White, Barlow and I guess Johnson ( Lewis of Mitchell condiering his performance in SA it seems he can do everything)

Thanks for that snippet about Laidlaw. Last night I finally got to see the Cnaberra game by sheer luck by clicking on that p2p link someone provided and the Canberra game was playing. Saw Laidlaw for the first time. He seemed capable..definitely not flashy but decision making ok..blonde of course.

Thought Melcho was playing well within himself - kicking was accurate but not the long passes he can deliver.

Vespa seems to have bulked up a bit in the upper body which helped in contested marks.


Definitely need a nick name for Pyke - "Moose" seems the be already taken by Mattner.

Great to here. He should really establish himself as one of the competition's elite midfielders this year and a goal scoring one at that.

In case anyone is interested, Sportingbet has McVeigh at a ridiculous $701 to win the Brownlow this year. I've had a crack at it. I can't understand those odds considering he's now a B&F winner and is exactly the the sort of player that usually wins it.

My first post at RWO and sorry if i step on a toe or two but I cant agree with everyone assessment.

Dan O'Keefe did not look good. He tried to up the anti in the second half and failed to achieve more. Laidlaw got beaten to the ball a lot by his opponent and turned the ball over for a Melbourne goal.

Matty O'Dwyer was probably our best young player on the day, despite an embarrassing out on the full. Meredeth was solid and White looked good.

Malceski had limited time on the ground but ran through the ground direct and was kicking nicely when on.

Goodes was sensational and if he keeps up this form could have a great season.

Murphy looked short a pre season, which he is but the fact that Roos wants to play him in a senior pracci match underdone is a good sign that he must be close to a call up.

Pyke rucked well including a tap to Moore's advantage that went to a goal but missed a couple of marks, one a real sitter on his own but came back later to get a goal, he's a determent bugger.

Ryse Shaw looks good and is already directing traffic with respect in the Half Back Line. Mattner too was hyped for the game and ran at the ball hard.

No injuries that I witnessed.

This guy and family went there,,really enjoyed what we seen from both the seniors and our up and comers..looks like a promising season this year even though is was a nothing match..

Was also great to catch up with some ole friends frm last year now that we reside in melbourne..

Thought OUR boys did the club Proud by signing autographs and posing with fans for pictures.my granddaughter has a great time..hasnt taken her hat of since coming home frm the game..loves her signed hat..

I was pleasantly surprised by how well most of the senior players are going this early in the season. When the majority of our established players were on the ground the Swans dominated the play. A real pleasure to see Crouchy grab the ball and sprint down the field - just like the old days. There were still plenty of clangers, and most of the Demons' goals came from Swans' errors, but there was a lot to like about the Swans performance, particularly in the second half.
Hall worked hard and looks very fit, but he's still on the angry pills . . . a series of late tackles, plus a "love tap" that would have got him at least a week if the TV cameras had've been there.
Murphy is big and tough and athletic, but he was badly beaten when he played in defence. Pyke looks very promising . . . you can almost see him learning every time he goes for the ball. He's already a useful tap ruckman, and he looked much more at home around the ground this week. I spoke to him briefly after the game, and definitely got the impression that he has a good brain to go with the brawn.
Of the other youngsters -

• White looks nearly ready.
• A pity Barlow is so soft, because he seems to have a complete set of footy skills. If they could just teach him to tackle, he'd be a quality player.
• Laidlaw goes in hard and is very fit. Looks great when running out of the back line, but still has a bit to learn defensively.
• Currie did very little . . . a handful of ruck duels . . . ran around the ground and made a few mistakes . . . a very light workout, but he seemed to come through okay. I'd be very surprised if he's ready for the seniors before halfway.
• Meredith, O'Keefe and Vezpremi all had stints in the forward line, and generally led out hard only to be crucified by poor delivery. None of them looked as good as Moore . . . I think he might have taken another step up in class.
• O'Dwyer tried hard and got to a lot of contests . . . disposal looked a bit unpredictable. I think Smith must have played because I got his autograph, but I don't remember seeing him on the ground.

Yeah we were - only prob was that it often wasn't to players in space running the lines but more just handballing around like a hot potato to players in worse positions and under pressure.
