Have you read Emma Quayle's book?
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

I don't think anyone's really making any suggestions as to why he did it as that's pure speculation (I'm assuming Davis hasn't stated somewhere that he did it because it saved him the effort?), merely that he pulled up and stood the mark and directed LRT to follow his man and LRT didn't. I think that's fairly clear in the video.

It's not exactly uncommon for a player to stand the mark of someone who is not their direct opponent, nor to direct another player to follow their man. It may very well have been the wrong decision, Geelong certainly scored a goal from it. My issue is simply that followers of the "you owe" religion often attribute Davis' final quarter performance to Kirk's leadership skills, and I'm not certain that's entirely accurate (it may very well be, I don't know!).

He absolutely is, as is Davis.

Can we just leave it at that?

I'm never comfortable burdening youngsters with the expectation they will match a former Swans great(or at least very good player). Of course this burden can also come from being picked in the first round, or being given a 'star' jumper number. Either way it clouds the reality that the great majority of recruits will never achieve what Davis did, even if you believe he did nothing more than take the field for 170-odd games.

Davis is traveling fairly well with his man up until he stops to man the mark. He pretty clearly (in my opinion at least) indicates to Lewis to follow his man.

Forgive the quality, I'll make sure to use a better format when uploading the Bevo highlights from that game.
Davis was not travelling fairly well. The video shows a typical Davis lack of effort. He trails Johnson and then stops. Everyman and his dog knew that defenders could run off Davis and do damage due to his lack of fitness and attitude. Look forward to the Bevo highlights reel.

Great video - does this mean I can defend at an AFL level like Davo?

No, you can stand like a startled kangaroo in the head (LRT) whilst your team mate (Davo) tries to cover your man and his as well.

All I want is for Vespa to be allowed to be Vespa, play his natural game, enjoy it and not become a clone like the rest of the team. so lets see what the season brings shall we?
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure..................
