    Robert Walls

This article is worth reading just for the oh-so-true description of Walls commentary...
Walls, of course, sees deeper into the game than us mere mortals

Walls is nothing more than you're average Monday's expert. He does not have anything incisive to say before the fact, which is what I look for in a quality commentator. If he really had superior football insights to the rest of us, he would have been a good AFL coach. For the record, here are his coaching career stats ...

    Games Coached - 207
    Wins - 85
    Losses - 121
    Draws - 1
    Win % - 41.1%

    Speaks for itself.

"You grabbed the footy before (the goal umpire) signalled it," piped umpire Vozzo. "You can't do that. Go and grab another footy."

This excellent encapsulation of every piece of pointless bureaucracy in the history of humankind ? to be fair, no doubt foisted on the umpires by the same irrational, arbitrary, and contradictory set of AFL-approved rules "interpretations" that routinely give ulcers to fans and participants alike on a weekly basis ? was greeted by the normally gunbarrel-straight Ten commentators with exactly the howls of laughter, derision and disbelief that it deserved.

"That's ridiculous!", "Just kick the thing!", and "For goodness' sake!" exploded various normally mild-mannered callers, no doubt echoing the thoughts of viewers nationwide, give or take a few quality swear words.

Mattner's response to a completely irrational situation was a peach. Without argument, he trotted back to the little sportsbag full of footballs behind the goal line, dropped the offending item back in the bag, and then picked up the exact same ball, and kicked out again ? a fact not lost on Luke Darcy and Anthony Hudson, who exploded into unseemly hilarity.
This sums up the unpiring perfectly for the night, and the laughter from the commentators said what everyone else (except probably the Fat Controller) was thinking.

They also paid out on the umpires for the second 50m penalty against Baz, and one of the commentators, who is on the rules committee, was obviously shaking his head as he said "The umpire got that wrong".

Probably get sacked from the rules committee for bagging the umpires.

To be fair he is a premiership coach, and did spells at Fitzroy and the Bears which wouldnt have done his win % any good.

Walls was one of the few who respected our style back in 05.

I don't recall that. My recollection is of him not approving of our style and as a result, having a major falling out with Roos, which was only patched up recently after the death of Walls' wife.

The commentators were effectively barracking for Sydney for the majority of the match.... not sure it influenced the outcome though!

I think, once they realised that the Swans were in with a chance, that they were very supportive!

Well, at least that article sheds light on why Mattner had to "replace" the football in that incident. It had everyone at the ground without a radio puzzled.

Walls was a good supporter of ours when we were up. Just listen to him the 2006 Qualifying Final as to how much he loved us beating the eagles

Does anyone else think it is amazing that the 1st time we actually bring the ball in quickley after a behind, since the rules change, we actually are told by an umpire we cant. I was on the floor laughing my head off when this happened and had to explain to my brother in law that we never bring in the ball quickley and th 1st time we do.... this happens. Hilarious.

No, the same thing happened to Luke Ablett in the first game under this rule a couple of seasons ago.
