    Wallace Death Knell

    Uh Oh.....

Refusing to speculate upon Terry Wallace's coaching future, March went on to describe his relationship with the beleaguered coach as "the best it's been in five years".

Save Terry Wallace...at least until round 6

I am getting really worried that Richmond will sack Terry Wallace immediately after round 5, leaving a caretaker coach to lead the Tigers for their Round 6 clash against the Swans at the SCG. The worry is that caretaker coaches (in all football codes) seem to always lift the players in the first game.

Especially when that coach is likely to be Kevin Sheedy.

Hope they put him in charge. Will set them back a further 10 years.

There's no way Sheedy will ever coach again. Their next coach will be Wayne Campbell.

After round one Wallace said "Judge us by our first 4 games". If Melbourne win I'm tipping Wallace is shown the door on Monday, end of discussion.

Man he is a joke. I've got no idea why Ninthmond gave him such a long contract.

His 5 year plan has been @@@@e. Drafting has been extraordinarily crap since he has been there. Tambling over Franklin? Oakley-Nicholls over Higgins? WTF was he thinking.

What a waste of 5 years.

I agree with you about Wallace, I think Richmond made a mistake giving him such a long contract, but I don't blame them for taking Tambling over Franklin per se -- there were still question marks over Buddy at that time about whether he'd have the temperament to succeed as well as how he'd cope with moving across from WA, as this article explains quite well -- I suspect the Hawks may have pulled the wool over everyone's eyes a little by letting the other clubs think they'd take Tambling over Roughead at pick 2 in the '04 draft. Was Pelchen in charge of recruiting at Hawthorn then???

The funny thing about that draft was that, more than likely, 16 teams would have rated Lance Franklin a greater natural talent than Brett Deledio at No. 1.

And it was mentioned by some that he was the best natural talent to come through since Nick Riewoldt.

But, swayed by several factors, he was picked up in the draft at No. 5, which was not considered a big shock.

He had a very poor under-18 national championships a couple of months earlier. Then his psychological evaluation showed up to be a friendly and amiable young man, but possibly too much of a fun-loving kid.

He was viewed as a likable rogue who might take a while to settle down and work it all out.

And, not least, he was going to have to cross from one side of Australia to the other, possibly without the support network of his parents.
Now if I was in Wallace's position I probably would still have gone with Franklin if I really thought he was the superior talent, but rightly or wrongly the Tigers ended up with Deledio and Tambling, and I just don't think it's fair for Tambling to be lumped with the tag of 'the bloke the Tigers picked instead of Buddy Franklin'. He could still be a great player too, and I don't think the expectation of being a high draft pick helps much. Sometimes it takes a little longer for a player to "find" himself at the top level...just look at McVeigh!!

As for the Tigers, you're pretty much spot on, they just need a new coach. Wallace's tactics are wasted on the current group IMHO. They have more talent now than they've had in a number of years, even if they are still a fair way off the main contenders in class, and SHOULD be in the mix for the top 8. If they're out of finals contention by the half-way point of the season I think they'll lose patience with him.

Wouldn't mind seeing Mark Harvey get a crack at coaching a proper club (yes, I do realise this is Richmond we're talking about, but it's a matter of degrees!!) unlike the mob he currently finds himself with...
