Those goalkickers I pulled straight from the sportingpulse website.

I missed the first goal of the game, do you know who kicked that? The scoreboard had Gilchrist on 1 at quarter time and then Hannebery 2 Gilchrist 1 at half time but I'm pretty sure Hannebery only kicked 1 in the second quarter.

Therefore, I assumed they had got it wrong in the first quarter crediting the first goal to Gilchrist when it was Hannebery's and fixed it at half time.

I missed the start of the game too because the goons managing the Moore Park Road entrance were completely indifferent to the crowd of 20 or so of us still standing at the locked gate on the main road as the clock ticked round to 10.50am.

I didn't see much of the rest of the first quarter goals because I was sitting at ground level in a pocket at the other end of the ground and was not in a good mood.

You're right about the Lewis goal. I thought it was Monty with 2 at 1/4 time but now I think you're right that it was just one.

I remember noticing Gilchrist kick his first quarter goal, which is why I didn't think it was early in the quarter. But I am not overly confident about my memory of what happened early in the game.

I was there for the start and saw ORB a few rows behind me, so I guess he will have written the goals down and will confirm in due course re: 1st qtr goals.

The player in the pic is definately Lewis, as mentioned.

Watched this game with great interest...
The positives:
Monty .... was a cut above and won them the game
Hannebery.... He's one young guy who's got the goods and should be a top midfielder of the future.
Micky O....rusty but seemed to get through unscathed, not sure about him at subiaco next week, one more week in the 2's I'd say.
Currie...Excellent contested mark, ordinary kick
Laidlaw....shows plenty of promise, needs more games under his belt
Gilcrist and Gordon ...look pretty good

The negatives:
Brabazon.....terrible
Orreal......not much better
DOK.....directed traffic ok but looks so slow and tends to kick off one step, he's got a long way to go.

In the first quarter I had a lot of trouble adjusting to the black on red sash numbers, especially as our guys were kicking to the Trumper end. So a lot of guesswork early on. Having said that my list of goalkickers came out the same as Ugg?s.

A few more listed blokes out on the field certainly helped. Adding Maj, Nick Smith (both cameos) and Laidlaw to the side, plus a full game from Monty made a big difference. There was also a much improved contribution from the scholarship kids, Gordon, RBN and Lewis. Ainslie were pretty dreadful in the first half, not a patch on Eastlake two weeks ago ? that made it hard to get a handle on how the blokes went.

The most encouraging thing about yesterday?s game was that Laidlaw is back. Two years ago we were pumping his tyres, his early and mid season form that year had many of us convinced he was going to be a ripper. By the time he was finally elevated his reserves form had peaked, and as usual for that time Roos played him completely out of position in that one game he had against Geelong. Thus, those who only saw him in that game did not see him anywhere near his best. The kicking yesterday was decidedly rusty, but we saw several flashes of the old 07 brilliance.

BBB?s dud, DOK. After all this time we are finally seeing this kid stretch out and run ? and hit blokes lace out with passes. Still a way to go, but he appears to be gaining in confidence after two shocking years, easily his best game thus far.

Crusher Currie ? Uncharacteristic poor kicking for goal ? should have got at least six. I attribute him spending most of his time up forward to still not being properly match fit after those early season groin problems. Last year Dan was pretty quick on the lead, but as yet we have not seen much of that either. What we have seen is a set of very sticky fingers on the end of a 200 cm body ? plenty of contested marking and all one grabbers. To those bemoaning that there are few KPP?s among our kids, Crusher played all his junior footy as a key forward. He can certainly do the job if the club chooses to send him that way.

Monty had a picnic yesterday, kicked 5-3. He showed no sign of that calf injury and every sign that he wants his place back.

What seems to distinguish the newbies this year is that we finally have recruited blokes who have decent disposal ? Hannebury and Gilchrist are both good kicks. The goals they kicked up at the Noble Stand end were both dead centre and their field kicking is excellent too. A big contrast to the rubbish dished out by Brabazon and O?Dwyer, neither of them have shown any improvement on this score.

I?m not convinced about Pyke, and would think that Crusher will soon jump him in the pecking order. Unfortunately Jake Orreal seems to have gone backwards after his good late season performances last year.

Kudos to all the top ups. They all had a real dip ought there and were important components of the win. Many of them looked very tired by the end, which probably explains why Ainslee came so close to running over the top. But for 3/4 of a game it looked like an oiled and cohesive team - far far better than a fortnight ago.

And an end word for DOK. I wouldn't have him in my best half-dozen but I thought his game today was very encouraging. Played in defence, took some strong marks, chased and tackled hard, looked like he was moving with ease, and was rewarded with a goal when O'Loughlin unselfishly kicked short to him when he might have taken a shot himself (after marking a super bullet-like pass from DOK in the first place).

Yes, absolutely kudos to the topups, and also thanks Liz for mentioning DOK. I agree with your precise, I should have noted him as well. And Curry's hands. Great mark. I hope it was the swirling wind that put his kicking boots into the bag before the siren went. Still, he is a great big big unit with extender harms and strong hands.....looking forward to what the future brings. He may be a unit, but he is a kid and is still growing into his own body.
