Ed Barlow/Dale Lewis

royboy, back in the olde days, pre RWO, we frequented 'SwansFlyingHigh' a basic message board in the very early days of the interweb message board phenomena.
Doctor J, in his previous guise as MtS (Mark the Swan) and myself in my previous guise as BigBadBob until I got too lazy to type it in and abbreviated to BBB which then became Triple B, had a BIG barney on the merits of Dale Lewis which became somewhat personal.
I was of the view that Lewis was just toooooooooo frustrating for words and DrJ was an unabashed fan.
Over time I guess we started to realise that our views on just about everything else Swans related were very similar. We met up when I went to Melbourne for a game in 01 or 02 and have been real good mates ever since, our families have become friends and we stay at each others houses once or twice a year on trips to watch the Swans play.
As for Matthew Nicks, let's just say Reggi was not a fanDriver of the Dan Hannebery bandwagon....all aboard. 4th April 09Comment

Thanks Triple B...thought I was suffering some crazy malady! And Dale Lewis was an anachronism...so frustrating, but like a lot of very good players, when he did something brilliant , he made it look so easy.
Adam Goodes is slightly similar, but at least you can actually see him putting in the effort...Lewis never seemed to put much in at all, but I believe that appearance was deceptive..Comment

My impression watching Ed is that most of the time the look on his face is of someone who's not sure he belongs out there. Sheepish grin when he does something good, bewilderment after a clanger. Bit of a self-confidence issue is my guess, rather than laziness. I suspect if he could get over this there is some real talent to see. Question is will he? He's had a reasonable number of games already.
Whereas Dale Lewis never lacked belief in himself.CIA Agent to Policeman: "Have you ever had anti-terrorist training?"
Policeman: "Yes, I was married once."Comment

Agree that it is a self belief issue but Ed has only had half a dozen or so first grade games. I wouldnt dismiss him just yet. Hardness is something in my opinion you can gain with confidence (just look at Scott stevens - not the hardest bloke in the game but a damn sight harder than he was in his days at the swans.). Skill on the other hand is something you either have or you dont and i reckon ed has it in bucketloads if he is prepared to believe in himself and use it.
Also Scotty always had good hands, but couldn't run, he is a lot better now and good on him.If you've never jumped from one couch to the other to save yourself from lava then you didn't have a childhoodComment

A few good points here. I may also point out that LRT has only just discovered self confidence and that has taken years. He used to look so embarrassed when he did something good.
