    Our Best and Worst 5

The difference between our best 5 and worst 5 is dramatic, I cant believe we will have at least another 50 players playing AFL in a few years, we (Swans)cant even put together 12 good players and we are not the only ones.

This will destroy the competion, I'd rather the AFL support N Melb, Melb, Port and Fremantle develop these clubs.
Spend more time with the colts coming thru and all the small clubs around the country that are struggling.

When I think L Ablett, LRT, Grundy, Moore, Jack and Bevan lately are professional players, my good it doesnt read well for the future of AFL.

Most teams are struggling to find a key full forward or full back now and the AFL are seeking new clubs.

I could see the Swans going down hill for a while we never introduced enough young players over the past 5 years. Now we are paying we are seeking basketball players and rugby players anyone who is big and athletic.
We are now trying to burn the candle on both sides, it doesnt work.

3 reasons why I hope we dont make the 8,
We will be beaten in the first round of finals
I will be in bad form after getting beaten for a few weeks
    We get better draft picks

Our worst 5 who are playing are: Malceski, Buchanan, Moore, Grundy and Crouch/Jack (doesn't do anywhere near enough).

Grundy, Bevan, Moore, Ablett, O'Loughin are the weak links.

Collectively offered us nothing and/or have been carried all year.

Micky O has only played the last 5 of 11 so he hasn't exactly been carried all year. His input so far has been serviceable though not outstanding (7 goals 7, would look a lot better at 10.4 for example) but he is coming back from injury without the luxury of a pre-season. His second half of the season should see some improvement. Still a needed player that does a lot of unselfish stuff.

Finding space for an additional 50 AFL standard players could work better with a shortened season. An equitable 17 rounds with a mid-April kick-off and a couple of split rounds where each team plays each other once before the finals. It might reduce the aggregate level of injury and teams would generally be able to field better sides. However its difficult to see the AFL warming to the idea of reducing the number of games across the season even if it could lead to greater competition parity.

Did you see the "offered us nothing and/or" bit?

It still doesn't apply to O'Loughlin.

                Spot on.

Buchanan, Malceski, Moore, Bevan & Ablett would be my worst 5 who regularly manage to get a game.

On a positive note, my best 5 would be: Goodes, C Bolton, Mattner, J Bolton & ROK.

                    Kirk of old, definitely.

Would have McVeigh and Jolly also ahead of him.

i like mattner (in the same way i liked seymour, warfe, heuskes) good solid citizen skills dont always work but i do like those half back flanker types (I'd even put bayes in there because he played a similar style even if he was a far better player)

but to put him in ahead of kirk jolly and mcveigh is staggering.

i'd find it hard to disagree with any of the rest. goodes is (along with hall i think) our only genuine match winner. the rest are critical to us winning but without goodes we really do look like a team from a bygone era.

Effectively playing one short with Malceski at the moment.

I bet you were thinking the same thing last year before we beat North comfortably. There's nothing like the buzz of September and being in the finals. I'd prefer finals (or a final) anyday over being a handful of spots higher in the draft.

I think you're taking our recent success for granted - just ask a Richmond or Melbourne supporter what they'd give to be involved in finals again.

Yep, totally agree. I remember the thrill when we got the Grand Final letter last year after beating North, I knew we were never going to get there, but for a few beautiful days we could look at that letter and dream.
