Could we still trade Hall for Lake? Or is he totally free since he retired?

Hall is still on our list and will technically be a Swans player at trade week but he is out of contract and not likely to be in hot demand. Can't imagine the Dogs even contemplating a trade for him.

Yep, must have told him to snap again and hit Rutten, passed on a note to Roosey asking for a favour by getting him to retire, at which point they pick him up via PSD.

        Brilliant work from the Doggies.

We are not going to be looked upon favourably here in Melbourne if we use some of our additonal COL allowance to out bid the Doggies on Lake and entice him to go into the PSD without any compensation for his loss.

I would prefer us to build by other methods than that.

Despite what many people think, we have a lot of credibility at present as to how we have gone about things over the last 10 years.

We have built a team that plays consistent finals intensity football, instigated a decent club culture and been willing to trade decently with clubs (via draft picks and player swaps) for players.

We have managed to get most of our deals over the line as the other clubs know we are serious when trading and willing to offer a fair price.

If Lake walked out on the Dogs and then ended up in Sydney via the PSD, knowing that we have the cap room and cash to pay him would leave a sour taste in a lot of people mouths regarding the club.

We have worked hard to earn the respect of the football world, no need to throw it all away for a cheap night out on the Lake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If we have money to spend, it's mostly due to losing a chunk of quality players, not the "COL" allowance, but I agree it's probably not the best way to do things.

No doubt it's retirements, but when have facts stood in the way of perception in the football world.

If Lake walks out of the Doggies, names his price and is happy to go to anyone in the PSD then I don't have an issue with it at all.

I just don't like him doing it and naming Sydney as his one and only prefered club.

A part of me agrees with you, the other side is saying if Lake wants to come to Sydney and names his price, screw what everyone else thinks!

                    3 big calls.

Top 8 is a possibility so 1 out of 3 is ok i guess.

The only reason I would entertain it is because Eade bought Hall to Sydney.

But if two players are out of contract, and both players nominate the other club as their preferred destination, a trade could be done just to make sure both get to where they want to go, bypassing the uncertainty of the PSD. Similar to Brisbane trading Corrie to Collingwood for pick 93, except it would work both ways.
Officially on the Reid and Sumner bandwagon!

Exactly, yet I was laughed down for mentioning this possible trade a few weeks back

I would be really disappointed if we traded our round 1 pick for Lake. He's worth a 1st round pick, but at 28yrs old, he's not really going to see us to our next premiership opportunity.

Ironically, it's similar to the ROK situation last year, but the clubs in the race were genuine contenders, therefore it made sense. We're deluding ourselves if we think we're our premiership window will re-open in 2-3 years time.

The way we have been playing of late I can realistically see us back in the 8 next year.

Whats the difference between a top 8 team and a top 4 team?
