In fairness this is not the place to come for consistent, reasoned, football commentary.

Seaby is surely very similar to Jolly in that he has always played second fiddle at his club and at his age is a good pickup. He is an ideal 'second chance' player for us.

Especially when we get to launch Steve Taubert at him. Look what he did for Jolly. For heavens sake look what he managed with Mike Pyke!!!! If Seaby has at this stage of his career the ability to absorb new coaching, then act on it, we could have a better than average player on the list. And there is the added bonus, he wanted to come. Probably saw how many of the pickups over the Roos years that have come over to the east side and prospered.

I think what Robbo is alluding to is, when news first broke of Seaby being courted by Sydney, almost to a man (and woman) on this site all said, WTF? There didn't seem to be any rhyme nor reason why he would be even on the radar.

Of course nobody knew that Jolly had asked to be moved back to Melbourne and the Swans were preparing for that.

Most of the comments towards Seaby were not particularly flattering of his ability back then, but now we have great hopes.

FWIW, I don't agree with Robbo's use of 'hypocritical' though. I think it's more a case of 'well now it's done, let's look for a positive'.

To be honest, I'm much more excited by the prospects of Mumford then Seaby and will be surprised if Mumford is not considered #1 ruckman by seasons end, if he is not already.

I agree with you 3B. It was a big surprise at the time, and its kind of flattening to find out that the PTB know more than we do!

Nothing wrong with a sneaky hook before anyone's looking, and I think it could be a fair set up. Seaby together with Mr Mumford on board could give us a relatively potent setup, especially when finally backed up with another 3 possibles, such as Jake, Pyke (yes, Pyke) and Curry; not forgetting Jesse at a pinch, Adam and Lewie when required.

Don't jump at me re Jesse, I know he is a KPP, but even BBB had a few hitouts!

And if both prove to be at least competent, Currie gets over his injuries, and even one of Pyke or Orreal develops to true senior level in the next 24 months, we potentially have some valuable trade currency at a time when draft picks will be at a premium and the shortage of genuine ruckman will increase.

I have never watched the game since to have a look at that specifically but it was an interesting stat if true.

That was his 2nd season of AFL, as opposed to Cox's 5th.
He's got 4 seasons under his belt since then, I'm sure he has improved.

You can't defend Ablett! That's not allowed! Sure, he was recovering from illness during the pre-season and was underdone all year. Sure, he's a hard working mid who can play a variety of tagging or inside positions. Sure, he should be hitting the peak of his career pretty soon.

Can you please explain what these variety of tagging or inside positions are?? He may be able to tag some players, but he's not fast enough to go with a Judd or Ablett. What do you mean by inside positions?

Delisting this year is probably a bit over the top IMO, but if he doesn't come good in 2010, then I can't see a spot for him going forward. Apart from being able to extract a ball (albeit poorly by throwing on the boot without looking), he doesnt have anything that he is particularly good at.

Kicking: Poor to Average Is capable of kicking long, but most of his kicks are thrown on the boot without looking where they are going

Marking: Average - Nothing special in the air

Pace: Poor to Average - Not overly quick

Fitness: Poor to Average - While dengue fever may have got him in 2009, he has never really had a great aerobic capacity

Versatility: Poor to average - What positions can he actually play? tagger & defensive forward. He's certainly not capable of playing back and he hasnt got the lungs to play on the ball for any length of time

I'm sorry staple that we can't all agree on everything but I dont rate him very highly as the modern game has passed him by.

Played forward towards the end of the year and maybe that be where he earns his keep

Yeah, my post was mostly written in jest. Guess you missed that. Not a huge Ablett fan myself. It's just predictable that people bag him out. In answer to your questions, 27 is not old, 25-28 year olds provide valuable experience to a side, unfortunately we dont have enough depth in that age bracket to toss aside all such players (aka Buchanan). But anyways! I'd rather see Bird, Hannebery and even Moore running around in that role. Or Playfair.

Well, they are wrong. Even my memory tells me our first goal came from a free against Cox when Jolly slotted one through. Equally, Bazza's goal in the last quarter came from another free against Cox to Jolly, who passed to Bazza on the lead.
