    Roos: the "anti-Pelchen"

I'm a very big fan of our trading this year. As been mentioned in the trades thread, we lost a good player who will not be a part of our next tilt, a bloke whose career had stagnated, plus a bloke who'd virtually retired. In return we got two ruckmen, a couple of in-and-unders with upside and retained two first rd draft picks. We probably paid slightly overs for both mummy and seaby but that's market value.

I know it's a kind of wanky, but I've been very happy that the Swans (well, Roos) are generally honest and up-front at the trade table, and we generally manage to get trades done. Additionally, he has bent over to try to get ex-players positions on another lists - witness saddo, schneids, dumpster - even powell ffs - whilst not baulking at stating what we'll pay for players to come here (Jolly, Mattner, Spida, Richards, Shaw, even Davis). ROK didn't work admittedly, but given what happened this year, i'm sure he'd agree that the fault wasn't ours.

When Roos finally hangs up the black pants and red polo, I'd just love it if we continued to contract him out at trade time to do his stuff. Compare him to that arseclown Pelchen. He'd be the voice of reason and a media magnet, and also a shining light to the players coming here in trades that we are a genuine strong, honest and transparent club.

Roosy stated when he announced the step down that he would probably remain involved in a recruitment role...I agree that would be ideal plus a board position I suppose.

Pelchen gets far too bad a rap. ROK has stated this year that Hawthorn was never a serious option, and looking at Hawthorn's trading this year, they were VERY accommodating. Kennedy and McGlynn for picks 39, 46 and 70? Williams and pick 9 for Burgoyne? Pick 25 and a downgrade of pick 41 to pick 69 for Gibson?
Officially on the Reid and Sumner bandwagon!

They had to be this year, because NO CLUB would have traded with them based on their efforts and trying to screw every club over in the previous years!

Don't mind Pelchen at all. I'd disrespect him if he gave away his players for less than they were worth.

He butchered the 07 trade week with the Thornton deal.
He butchered the 08 trade week with the Okeefe deal.
He nearly butchered 09 when he promised Bourgoine a deal, when in the end he would have preferred Jolly.
He has to stop promising players deals and then trying to get them for free.

Think we came out on top after the trade period - but I thought we were screwed royally in the Jolly trade.

I don't know what happened, but it seemed we were only really dealing with the Pies. It seemed from the outset that the Pies knew Jolly was going to them and nothing was ever going to or did change. Jolly's management from the start said as much, leaving the Swans with no power.

Jolly's management would have spoken to a couple of Melbourne clubs they thought were in need of a ruckman and were willing to give up a first rounder.

Outside of Collingwood and Hawthorn who else would have been interested in Jolly?

Carlton were not, Melbourne would not have taken him back, Geelong, err no. St Kilda no, Dogs no cash, Essendon unlikely, Richmond maybe but not willing to give up an early pick!

Once Hawthorn committed to Burgoyne there was only one deal left.

We held out long enough to sniff the wind on the Burgoyne deal, but as soon as that went to mediation and the Swans knew Hawthorn were fair dinkum by offering up Campbell Brown, we took the only deal available which was Collingwood.

These deals don't just start to crop up the week before trade week. Most player managers do extensive work on clubs needs and start looking at their list of players and who might be available to move for better deals long before the season ends.

We got what was about fair for Jolly, maybe slightly less and we then had to pay slightly over the odds for the Mummy due to our position in needing another ruckman.

Apparently, it was reported before trade week began, that some clubs had asked not to deal with him. That he be excluded from trade week.

Whattha! That is pretty heavy. Is it because he has no people skills and little boardroom nouse? Pelchen that is....

I've heard that not wanting to deal with any Collingwood officials is a standing agenda item raised each by all the other clubs.

I think trade week is over and we can stop making things up or at least repeating them.

No comment on the Thornton deal, I can't really remember it.

O'Keefe stated this year that he was never going to Hawthorn, that they were never seriously involved, and it was all media speculation.

He stated that they were never interested in Jolly (or at least offering pick 9 for him) because they had already committed that pick to Burgoyne.

There's a lot of hate for Pelchen, but usually it comes out that he did little to nothing wrong. I'm not a Hawthorn fan by any stretch, but I just don't really get it.

His most infamous non-trade occurred while he was at Port Adelaide where he refused to accept a deal with Collingwood for Nick Stevens, which resulted in him moving to Carlton in the pre season draft for no compensation.
