Bradshaw a Swan

Can someone explain this "getting player x will help with the development on player y" concept. I find it difficult to understand. Seriously can someone explain it to me.
Daniel Bradshaw is a full forward. No doubt about it. We have a 21 year old who showed tremendous promise in that role last season while playing on quality defenders. How will it be beneficial recruiting a 31 year old with bad knees who plays the same position?Comment

Robbo I worry to but the gap without Bradshaw is far worse I feel....... his season injury in 2007? and his age for a 3 year contract is a major concern..........I personally would prefer Ball in the midfield and Goodes upfront but Adam is not nearly as good as kick as Bradshaw and 58 goals from Bradshaw in 2009 would have made a great difference for us.......here's hoping in 2010.
As a counter argument Goodes offers more than Ball in the midfield and Ball is probably a million to one to come to Sydney......so Bradshaw solves the Goals gap and ability to be flexible in styles of footy............ie we need to cover Mick and Barry not just Barry and replace 70 goals plus and we need dominance in our players leading for the ball upfront
White and Bradshaw can cover those two i feel......well cover their 2009 form anyway........and or most importantly at least give our 2010 team the best chance possible given what is available in the market place and what we have now
You would hope Bradshaw if true doesnt get paid overs.........we have only done that for the very best in Plugga and Barry Hall in the forwards department........but the reality is we are in between a rock and a hard place not having another dominant FF in 2010.....If Goodes or White got injured we are screwed I feel and that would be a nightmare for our kids coming thru
White can float between both roles of CHF and FF and will get better and better as long as his kicking keeps developing.......Last edited by Auntie.Gerald; 17 October 2009, 10:06 AM."be tough, only when it gets tough"

1. Not too hung up on the 'get experienced player X to help train up player Y' theory. Depends on how good a teacher player X is, which you can't tell just by watching him run around. But in a more general sense, all young players learn better at a club that has a cohesive gameplan, good discipline and a culture of winning. Having proven quality players in your best 22 helps with all of that.
2. To say 'X is a full forward, Y has looked best playing at full forward, therefore X and Y can't play in the one team' doesn't add up in the modern game. You look at the practical realities of what each player provides and whether they can work in tandem in the forward 50 arc. If the answer is yes, then as I think Roos once quipped, the janitor can do the official team placings on a Thursday evening.
Whether BBBH was named at CHF or FF, and whether MOL was named at FF, FP or elsewhere, we always knew they were going to turn up, do their respective thing, and try to stay out of each other's space, each week.Comment

i need a little help with the below statement........ie why does it help Bradshaw if he nominates for the pre season draft in comparison to the National Draft?
"Bradshaw will decide on Monday whether to enter the national or pre-season draft.
He is more likely to be the master of his own destiny if he nominates for the pre-season draft on December 15."

I would suggest it has something to do with the picks available at the club he wants to play for. I doubt we would use pick 14, which means we'd need him to last until pick 39. Even so, if we nominates Sydney and says he only wants to play for us, then no other team would touch him.Comment

If he goes in the PSD, he nominates a big figure that the club of his choice is happy to pay, that is beyond the cap limits of other clubs. Also, many clubs already commit to players in the PSD increasing his chances of getting to his club of choice. It doesn't always work. I remember one year the Swans said they would draft someone but the AFL told them on the day of the draft that the players' demanded salary wouldn't fit in the cap so he missed out (I think he might have tried to sue the club over it too). There is also the risk that a club with a higher pick will take the punt anyway, if they can fit him in the cap. Sydney's advantage is their salary cap room and a high-ish pick.
What I don't understand is if a player really wants to go to a club with sufficient room in the cap, why they don't ask for a lot of money so that he's priced himself out of reach of all other clubs - more than the player is worth (this is clearly unfair to the Club and its other players), but once he's been drafted to the club of choice he "donates" some of the pay back to the club so he is effectively paid market value. This would make it fair to the Club and team mates and get the player to his club of choice.
Of course this is draft tampering... which is probably why it isn't done... although I'd be surprised if someone hasn't at least thought of doing it (if the Blues haven't already done it at some stage).

If a player nominates $1m a year in the PSD and a club picks him, that is what is counted in the salary cap regardless of whether the player and club subsequently renegotiate to a lesser amount.Comment

I'm sure that it would be considered draft tampering (which kept one of the Robran boys out of the game for a while I think)Comment

Looks like we have competition from Carlton.
A BIDDING war appears to have broken out for the services of Brisbane Lions forward Daniel Bradshaw, with the Sydney Swans and Carlton set to offer three-year deals worth up to $1 million.
....
Carlton chief executive Greg Swann said yesterday the Blues had "plenty of dough" and were keen to lure Bradshaw to Visy Park on a three-year deal.
