    Gunns not guns.

It is an old (in the European sense of the word) Northern Tasmanian family name, then company.

I am busy making a crossed fingers sign at the mention of this in a thread about My all time favourite Kel...talk about the Christ and the anti-christ.

"The former Collingwood forward booted 150 goals in 97 appearances for the Swans but succumbed to a string of injuries and off-field misdemeanours."

        Ohhhhh...Please explain!

''The Sydney fans have got their side and I don't think they would leave their Swans membership to become a member of another team,'' he said. ''What [GWS] need to do is grow their membership and support from zero from the ground up.

''It's going to be a challenge to them, but the AFL wouldn't have invested all this money into it unless they thought it could work.''

For what it's worth Nick has hit it on the head here. Particularly the rather rascalishly (I think I made up a word!), sarcastic last sentance...

The more I think about this GWS thing the more I think it's going to explode in the faces of the AFL.

I think about the people I know who live in the Western Suburbs of Sydney who haven't embraced AFL in anyway after nearly 30 years of having a team here - they all follow rugby and will till they die...and if any of there kids showed an interest.... The best analogy I can think of is - it's like dragging one of these guys into a gay strip club and telling them they have to like what they see. The guys I'm thinking of won't react well - not well at all.

It's getting close to D-Day...can't see anyone who supports the Swans leaving them (particularly considering the recent Premiership) - where is this legion of fans going to come from?

          Time will tell.

Nick Davis sounds like he's all over the shop these days, not knowing what he's going to do next.

And I've no idea how you can compare supporting AFL to visiting a gay strip club, although I'm well aware some NRL morons refer to the code as "GAYFL".

let bogans be bogans. over the next 20 years, 'the west' will continue to change as it has with increased immigration of people with no affiliation to either league or afl (but possibly soccer) and a general socioeconomic lift. Afl is a great game and as usual, the bogans on here can't handle the thought that people out west are at least as diverse as the east and are just as likely to convert as the east was 30 years ago

A bit off topic, but the back page of today's Sunday Age (sorry, I can't find it on their website, so no link) says Nicky D has an offer from the Saints "to join pre-season training before the December 15 draft." (In the back page Pssst section by Bruce Eva.)
                I'd like to see that.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

With Paul Roos comments lately I will not be surprised if he does not go to GWS in 2011. I have a very strange feeling about this. He seems to be softening on his attitude.

I think you're missing one or two key points.

                    1. They have never actually had a team in Western Sydney.

                    2. This is not about the die hard fans of the rugby codes or the other football code. It is primarily about an investment in the younger generation and generations to come.

The more you think about that the more you will understand why this will be a big success and a massive boost for the AFL and our club.
"As a player he simply should not have been able to do the things he did. Leo was a 185cm, 88kg full-back and played on some of the biggest, fastest and best full-forwards of all time, and constantly beat them." Roos.
Leo Barry? you star! We'll miss ya, ''Leapin''.

Double negative? You mean to say you won't be surprised if Roos DOES go to GWS?

It's all about about money - the AFL is prepared to stick $200m into the Bogan project, so they'd really have to screw up badly to not make it work. They reckon it's worth that much for the extra TV product they'll deliver, plus drawing in the equivalent of Adelaide and Perth combined.

Remember the Swans 05-06 grand finals are both in the top ten of the all-time most-watched Australian TV programs. A Sydney derby twice a year will pull out a big chunk of that. An all-Sydney grannie would break all records.

There's no expectation of building an Essendon in five years. Like in any business they'll have targets for members, crowds and income, and the league will carry them a long time.

Don't under-estimate the cross-town factor. I'm p--ed off about the Boges stealing our legend, even though it's a sensible move for them and for Kels. After two years of this I'll be more than ready to grind their mullet heads into the SCG turf.

THREE; Jack, Harry and Ben, plus two daughters, one of whom (Maddy) would probably like to take up footy.

I've worked out that Jack is a possibility in about five years or so, but its never sure if the kids are going to take up where Dad left off.

Stuey's boy would now be about ten, so we have a bit of a wait for him.

When/If the next crop arrive, it will be a bumper harvest.

The Swans were not solely a Sydney team at inception...they were a team for NSW. I grew up in the middle of the Hunter Valley (League Heartland) and started following the Swans seriously while living in Newcastle. I think it's safe to assume if you showed any interest in Aussie Rules living in Sydney you'd be following the Swans after 30 years in their current form.

I appreciate your second point - and have held the same view for the same reasons...unfortunately the more I think about it I go in the opposite direction. I'm sure over time they will become established but established like Collingwood or established like North Melbourne?
