    Stewie gives Sumner the nod.

A great Q&A with Maxfield talking up Sumner.

Maxfield singled out South Australian recruit Byron Sumner, taken at pick number 54 in the draft, and predicted his likely AFL debut during the 2010 season.

yep in his you tube videos etc he does it easy.

a little like a smaller more agile Malceksi in the way he nails the left foot pass......he is graceful as he moves down the field.

He has a pretty long kick also which will help if he gets a shot on the flanks some where.

the main danger is the opposition coach putting the big mobile guy on him one on one on the flanks etc but we shall see !!

I do agree that when I was studying the video performances, he did look to have footy smarts..

      Hope that is the case?

My gawd! Stuey has spoken! Out loud. The silent one has made a verbal contribution! That must mean the kid is the goods.

Mind you, the report that Sumner got here early and is absorbing as much as he can, had me thinking "hmm, MickyO did that when he arrived, didn't he". I will never call any player The New ....., but it would be great to have another of Micks ilk.

I was puzzled by that comment by Maxfield because the draft was held on a Thursday night and the new players were all at training on the Monday being unveiled to the media. How 'early' was he??!

I think you'll fnd that appearance was in reality just a brief visit.

Don't think so. They started training straight away and moved into their shared houses.

Someone somewhere likened Byron Sumner to the rubber man Gavin Wanganeen. Wanganeen was an absolute star and had a flexible body that absorbed collisions that would have hospitalised most. He used his size or lack of it to advantage milking frees . If he is 1/2 as good as Wanganeen we have got a star.

I seem to remember one collision in the QF 2003 final that left Wanganeen writhing on the ground!

                      Blakey's on the bandwagon too.

Byron just knows how to find the footy. Played very well through the midfield, doesn't get flustered under pressure and takes the right option with his disposal. Byron adds genuine leg speed to the side.

I think young Sumner is heading for the seniors sooner rather than later. The question is, who should be worried? Bevo?

Then there is TDL. I think he has Moore's position in his sights.
He had observed that people who did lie were, on the whole, more resourceful and ambitious and successful than people who did not lie.

At this stage Moore and Bevo would have to be worried. How they respond to this is the key to their future. It appears that the skills TDL offers are just the same skills that we lack on the field,ie a slick forward who can find the goals many different ways, crumbing, marking, leading ,etc.To be fair ,Moore was never meant to be a slick forward and is more the midfield /follower type who just needs a bigger engine.Sumner is all class at this stage, smooth as silk, something Bevo definately is not. We gotta see them both under match conditions however to really judge their potential.I can't see Roosey leaving Bevo out of the side given his courage.
