Saints dump Lovett after rape charge

ST KILDA has sacked recruit Andrew Lovett the day after he was officially charged by Victoria Police with one count of rape.

Club CEO Michael Nettlefold, coach Ross Lyon and vice president Ross Levine announced the decision at Moorabbin on Tuesday.

The only way that St Kildas "reputation" will be harmed is if there is any truth in the reported rumour that this happened whilst he was in the company of some of his team mates.

This could all blow up in the face of the Aints, with the Players Association now weighing in, and hopefully it does and they go another year without a flag..

I totally agree. Innocent until proven guilty is probably the most important principle underlying our society, and it's always getting put under pressure.

That said, Lovett is probably his own worst enemy.

The timing seems a bit odd. If he is guilty of the various contractual breaches the Saints have referred to, why did they wait until the day after he was charged with a criminal charge to sack him? Why didn't they do it some time ago?

Because at the time they said that would wait until the official police investigation was over.

The police obviously think they have enough evidence to charge him.

It was the right time to terminate the contract.

If that is the case there is a good chance the season will be destroyed. Hopefully the case can be dealt with a little more than the much delayed Brett Stewart (NRL if anyone cares) charge. Long delays hurt everyone including the alleged victim.

Read in the paper that the Roosters sold 56 memberships within two hours of announcing Mason was leaving the club, their membership has been going up a lot compared to last season, conversely the Cowboys have had a decrease in the number of people signing up since signing the lard mouth

THe smart ones were the Bulldogs who flicked him first chance they got. Clubs just cannot afford to keep idiots any more. Between media, sponsors and the commercial realities Saints have just told Lovett to get lost and we will wear the consequences. Smart decision I reckon

I dont think the Saints had much choice with Lovett although I agree that someone isnt guilty until the charges are proven.
