Update on the Syyyyddddnnneeeeyyyy Chant issue

Who was the moron who thought that going on and on and on about the special Syyyyyddddnnnneeeyyyy chant could force the crowd into coming up with it whenever someone handballed!!

Haven't the Sydney Swans worked out that this is a special moment chant. The moving body of consciousness which is the Sydney Swans Members and Fans have a heart beat that makes noise, and it recognises that the moments when the change from noise to the S Chant is a special time. When the boys do something that is outstanding and pushes the team closer and closer to overcoming the opposition. Or an acknowledgement of an outstanding game in progress. Or an acknowledgement of an individual outstanding effort.

It is not a blather of "ok boys and girls, lets have a game and we will call it the Sydney Chant Game".

This is our call. It is not the Swans marketing call. It is not the twit poncing around the stadium's call. It is not the flashed up signage (Que??????) call.

Bugger off you lot. WE started it in Round 22 1996. WE are in charge of the call. The red and white body of people. NOT you.

And get this. If the game is NOT good enough, no chant. If there is NO special moment, no chant. Haven't you lot worked this out YET! Its been almost 15 years since it was started, and you still don't understand?

So, everyone, I ask you to add your spleen to this Thread and hope that it gets read by people who can report this back to someone more intelligent than is currently in charge of this silly blot.

It was singularly THE MOST ANNOYING thing on the night at the Stadium, it was dumb, then it got dumber when they flashed it on the screen when The Saints scored an amazing goal.

Leave the S chant where it belongs, in the heart and minds and the wisdom of the fans.

Totally agree. When the chant emerged for the first time in 1996 round 22 against West Coast, it was the most eerie sound. Spontaneous and that's the way it should stay. Remember a few years ago they used to play audio of the Syd-nee chant over the loud speakers at the SCG? Cringe-worthy and everyone in the crowd totally ignored it.

It cannot be contrived, it just happens.

Mind you, a typical time it would happen was when we got to within a kick in the 4Q last night.

It was a tailor made moment for the chant.

The chant started in out area at that time, but within 20 secs was competing with the mindless 'Syd-ney clap,clap,clap' from our very own cheer squad.

C'mon cheer squad, if 80% of the crowd have started the slow chant, get with the program.

100% correct Primmy you are spot on- we were just sitting there going "nah - nothing has happened to warrant it" it cant be pre meditated - it just happens when the lads lift beyond our expectations.
the "cmon Sydney make some noise" honestly - haven't they realised by now that we dont like being told what to do??? I do hope that they get the hint because last night I feel we put our feelings forward in not responding to the call.

And another thing was their continuing notice "have you turned your lights off? honestly - pretty silly what were they expecting people do, sit there and go "oh @@@@ I forgot, better nip home now and switch the lights off"- a bit late if you were already at the bloody ground wasnt it?

Primmy - that's bang on - I actually can't believe the footy club gave it the OK - my guess is that the stadium management did a US study tour (they do that stuff over there) and to justify the study tour they decided to try it here. Swans management, please put your foot down here - its not our way, its not part of footy, its just not on.

Also - that wet and windy night in R22 1996 was truly spooky when that chant first emerged - half of my mates skulked off to the Olympic to avoid the weather (soft) and missed it

Time for the fans to assert their legal ownership of the chant and prevent the stadium from using it. Kookaburras, vegemite sandwiches etc etc.

I also agree with Triple B - when the chant did start, spontaneously, at a moment in the 4th qrtr when it looked like we might have the momentum to snatch the lead, the cheer squad went with the other clap clap clap chant. Dumb.

I don't think anyone was a fan of it, and really, it's not something you need to put the words to up on a screen, say like a club song. You either know you're at a Sydney game, or you're lost.

As a bit of a pisstake though a few of us tried to go with the chant in time with the words on the screen......the timing of the letters is out of whack (way too slow) and even then it should be a long Syyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyd bit and then just Ney, not Neeeeeeeeeeeeeey......it just doesn't work!!!
