@@@@, I was away so this is all news to me. I watched on tele but don't recall seeing it???

Bull@@@@ I say. You are dead right Primmy. It just happens naturally. You can't engineer it.

I really hope this doesn't encourage some of the newer fans to constantly jump out of their seat and try and get one started all the time. No disrespect intended to the newer fans of course.
Captain, I am detecting large quantities of win in this sector

At games from what i've experienced, the Syyyyddney Syyyyydneey chant appears around these points

      - When we are on a massive roll on ( kicking our way back to say a goal behind) in the last quarter
      - When we have blitzed a team with 6 + straight goals to take a commanding lead

I was pretty embarrassed by it, I could just picture Saints fans who'd traveled up smirking about Sydneysiders; we had some sitting not far from us that I wanted to say "errrr... hehe.... errr... the crowd does actually chant of our their own volition..."

The strange thing about harping on about the slow Syyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyddddddddddddney chant not having been heard since the 90s was that it actually made me think "maybe the crowd noise isn't worth it, clearly nobody who works for the Swans can hear it".
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

Just saw an ad on channel 10 for the Richmond game. The chant was used throughout and it sounded fantastic. Can't wait to get back to the SCG.

That's probably because they had to start getting the ground ready for the thugby league game that was on the next arvo. Still though, it was a nice night and all ...

Honestly, there wasn't much to chant about on Saturday night.

Although, I have lost my voice from yelling and screaming at the players to MAN UP. Basic footy skill I would imagine. I believe an appointment with the good Doctor Gibbs may just restore my faith - and my vocal chords for the SCG.

I'm also really, really, really pissed off that they've moved the interchange benches around.

The origins of this chant have been alluded to earlier in this thread. It was first heard R22, 1996 v West Coast when we claimed the minor premiership. The weather that night also provided much of the context. It had been pissing down that day and continued to so well into the game, and then the rain was accompanied by a gale. It resembled conditions prevalent in English soccer hence the chant. It was spontaneous, eerie and also a reflection of the other-worldly conditions. It originated in Sydney (from an AFL perspective), and numerous other clubs have since adopted it.

This business of orchestrating when chants could or should happen during the course of a game is a very sad development but not the first time this kind of rubbish has happened. As mentioned the same chant was played over the speakers (which occurred v Geelong in 1997) and was more than embarrassing (incidentally we lost), as was that ground announcer in the 80s who would question umpiring decisions during the course of the game, that horrible Glen Shorrock ?Kick On? crap after every goal even often when we trailed by 12 goals, and those hideous advertising exercises where punters hold up a sign stating ?GOAL? (who needs the goal umpires?) look almost as ridiculous as those one-day cricket idiots holding up a sign that says ?6? every time that a ?4? is scored.

Get rid of all this crap I reckon. The people own the game, not you buffoons. The game is ?entertaining? enough, and maybe that?s the inherent problem, being perceived as an ?entertainment option? as opposed to something so much more. If it?s vacuous entertainment that you are after, go and see Cop Out. Sounds appropriate enough.
It's very hard to live in a studio apartment in San Jose with a man who's learning to play violin. That's what she told the police when she handed them the empty revolver.

Update on the Syyyyddddnnneeeeyyyy Chant issue

I am pleased to say that we, the people, the squeaky wheels, have been heard. I have had a chat or two with people involved, and yes they did call me to discuss the issues that are so concerning, and at length .

I explained where the chant came from, and how and when it evolves on game day. That it is not something that can be practiced. That it was "our" gold star to paste on the game when it was deserved. I could have used the word nebulous in here somewhere, but I forgot

. The big screen urgings will be removed and we will not be karaoke'd.
. The mugging before the game will at least be modified.
. There is an understanding of why we have ownership of that particular chant on gameday.

The problem the marketing people have is getting people in to the games and getting them to come back. I acknowledged that the chant is a spine tingler etc, but that it could not/would not be used if the game was crap (sic) and how effective it would be if you hung the promotion of the Swans Footy Club on a chant that may or may not take place. I also made some suggestions about some of the effective promotion that used to take place in the '90s.

It was a good discussion - (I have been dying to use this) - Frank and Meaningful.
