Swans games on FTA into Melbourne this year

At least you have the option of watching at the pub with an ice cold froffy. In a few week's time I'll be living, for the rest of the season, in a country that's probably never even heard of AFL!

These people are your friends....no www. btw. Swans/Richmond came down at 650 kB/S (7.0 Mb/S) in about an hour less than 20 hours after game start. Compare to the international AFL site which offers a really dodgy stream on software that doesn't work properly 48 HOURS AFTER THE GAME FINISHES and charges actual money.

The FTA coverage hasn't changed in a long while.

I would still suggest that this year is as low as it has ever been for FTA TV in Melbourne for the Swans.

My wife is a Bombers supporter, although she does come along with a Swans scarf when we get to the games, but who knows what our kids would do when / if they come into our lives (but hey, Geelong aren't too bad of a team). Interestingly, it was the Cats who felt that they were not represented on TV enough in Melbourne a fews years ago (and recognised that it was detrimental to their ability to retain fans) and as such they lobbied to have many of their games shown live against the gate (even when played in Melbourne) in order to get them a stronger presence on TV.

They were once South Melboune based and there are a lot of supporters still around down here.
we have a Melbourne based membership because the Swans realise there is a supporter base, just that the AFL seem to have forgotten that....
With all the new FTA channels, there really is nothing syopping a 7 and 10 deal (or any other combo of channels) to show the games without having to rope in Foxtel.
However, it all comes down to the $$$ and if Fox offer, they'll accept again.
Unless the AFL decided to regulate the TV rights a bit.
But that might mean Collingwood fans NOT being able to see the majority of their games on FTA.

Unfortaunately that is not the case CTS, none of the FTA's are able to show live Australian based sport on their second digital channel's due to Howard's goverment legislation.

The current government has indicated it is willing to change this, but only if the anti-siphoning laws are relaxed which the FTA's are refusing to do so at present.

None of this is contolled by the AFL, all they can do is follow the legislation by offering the rights to FTA's only and then rely on them selling on games to Foxtel.

About the only thing that will change with the next TV rights deal is that each timeslot might be sold separately which means that all three FTA's have a game to show on Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.

I'd suggest that the channels would want to show the AFL games on their 'first' FTA channel.
The second (and third) stations will allow them to shuffle other shows around to enable the games to be telecast.
Having said that, I haven't read the legislation you mentioned, so I really have NFI what is possible and what is not.

Channel 10 were really smart in creating One, their dedicated sports channel (even if they still have to double up with the big sports on their standard channel in order to comply with legislation).

With so much TV being recorded on PVRs or downloaded from the net (which enables skipping or fast forwarding of ads) - live TV (such as sport) is the one sure way to keep advertising revenue at a premium.

CTS, a rare occurence on a Saturday Afternoon, you can watch the Swans on 10 from 3pm, 1 hour delay.

Maybe I should just be happy to see us play, although it may not be the best game for a Swans fan to watch...

As for the hour delay, I'm cool with that. In fact, as I've said before, the if the AFL negotiated TV rights to show the game on FTA with a 12 hour delay, I'd eitehr stay up late or tape it to watch in the morning.
Show every game on Foxtel live, then show a repeat on FTA in teh middle of the night and they'll shut me up

If it was a Melbourne game I could understand the hour delay, but interstate games should all be live.
But at least we get it.

As for your last comment, I agree. They've done this in the past with Melb/Dogs v Swans games, but not many others.
Not sure what the reasoning behind it is, but at least it was viewable.
