AFL Canberra Round 2: Queanbeyan v Reserves

    AFL Canberra Round 2
    2pm Sunday 18th April
    Dairy Farmers Park

    Form
    Swans
    Reserves 20.8 (128) defeated Belconnen 9.12 (66)
    Tigers
    Queanbeyan 10.11 (71) defeated Eastlake 7.11 (53)

    History
    2009
    R5 Reserves 19.15 (129) Queanbeyan 18.13 (121)
    R10 Queanbeyan 12.14 (86) Reserves 15.11 (101)
    R15 Queanbeyan 7.15 (57) Reserves 26.21 (177)

The Reserves have a good recent record against the Tigers. The won all 3 of their meetings last year, which included their only 2 away victories for the year. This good record stretches back to 2008, where the Reserves won 2 of their 3 matches against Queanbeyan that year.

    Possible team list
    • 8. Trent Dennis-Lane
    • 10. Daniel Currie
    • 11. Ed Barlow
    • 13. Patty Veszpremi
    • 16. Gary Rohan (Senior emergency)
    • 20. Sam Reid
    • 22. Byron Sumner
    • 23. Lewis Johnston
    • 25. Ted Richards (Senior emergency)
    • 26. Henry Playfair (Test - ankle)
    • 28. Dylan McNeil
    • 35. Campbell Heath
    • 36. Chris McKaigue
    • 38. Mike Pyke
    • 40. Nick Smith (Senior emergency)
    • 42. Paul Bevan
    • 43. Matthew O'Dwyer
    • 44. Jake Orreal (Under assessment - back soreness)
    • 45. Nathan Gordon
    • 46. Taylor Gilchrist

Given this game takes place after the seniors on Saturday, there is a very good chance that all 3 emergencies can see out the full game. Jarred Moore is the only injury doubt for the seniors but Roos was confident on Thursday that Moore would play.

While he hasn't been setting the field alight, Bevan's demotion from the emergencies is probably due more to the fact he has played 1 half in at least 2 of the 3 reserves games and the coaches would be keen to get him more game time. Perhaps a different role might help his chances of a senior recall, as the potent forward line aided by an efficient midfield last week gave little chance for Bevan to mop up as the small forward.

Byron Sumner has not played in any of the 3 games, and is reportedly back in Adelaide at the moment.

Otherwise it is a formidable lineup and includes our first draft picks in each of the past 3 drafts - Rohan (2009), Johnston (2008) and Veszpremi (2007). Barlow and O'Dwyer have also been in excellent form and yet can't even get a look in on the emergencies list.

    Queanbeyan
They have lost former Swan and B&F winner Mark Powell to North Shore. Key players include their captain Ryan Quade who will be marking one of our tall forwards, goal scoring machine Mark Armstrong likely to face Ted, and dangerous forward James Kavanagh who kicked 4 goals last week.

    Prediction
The poor away form last year cost the team any chance of making the finals - only winning 2 of the 10 games. They will be keen to build upon an excellent start last week with another victory. With a plethora of forward targets to choose from, and a solid defensive unit at the other end, a Swans victory is the most likely result.

In other words, after you Beltconnen, you Creambeyan.
Thanks, ugg, for the rundown on the ressies match. Down here it's hard enough seeing the firsts at times, but we never see the twos, and I value everything you and others post about how they are going (ORB, Liz, Primmy and others, take a bow).
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

What top up's will we use this week? Hopefully we have some Murray Bushrangers players having a run as there is a week off in the TAC Cup. It was great to get Dylan McNeil in there last year to have a look at him.

        Dear god....
However, I wont be travelling to the capitol of cold on Sunday to watch the ressies, so I hope someone suitably biaised towards the boys can give us a picture. I would like a watch on Johnston, Reid, Heath, Rohan, McNeil and Ves in particular, and all of the others.

Do we take toppies from the local leagues in Canberra? or do we make em travel too. Anyone?
Also does anyone know how they get noted and picked in the first place?

Canberra top up's are offered by the Canberra clubs and are more often than not U18 players.

They've updated the sportingpulse website with the Swans list of 17 listed players (the 20 I posted above minus Sumner, McKaigue and Orreal). The top ups seem to be a mixture of Canberra and other country league U18s.

Miles, Whiley & Segrave are all Murray Bushrangers so that's great to see.

Thanks for your comprehensive wrap Ugg. I really like to keep up to date with what's happening in the Reserves but a bit hard to do from Adelaide!

Looking forward to catching a couple of Ressie games mid year.
