Obviously Freo weren't that keen on him either, otherwise they would have picked him in the national draft. From what I understand, he had a few deficiencies in his game at the time of the draft that seem to have been fixed by the Freo coaching staff. So kudos to Freo's recruiting and coaching departments.

Yeah at least we aren't Richmond who passed on him adding him to the illustrious list that includes having not one but two picks before Buddy Franklin went at Pick 5 and taking Aaron Fiora over Matthew Pavlich!
The Melbourne papers during the draft period said we were going to pick him with our last pick, which we didn't do - going for TDL instead - who was touted to go earlier
Once could have bought Manhattan for $2, what do you do, it happens
You don't ban those who supported your opponent, you make them wallow in their loserdom by covering your victory! You sit them in the front row. You give them a hat! Toby Ziegler
Barlow would be competing for a spot with Bird and Hannebery, and probably also Kennedy and McGlynn, not to mention young mids like Meredith, Nick Smith, even Patty Veszpremi if he's going to eventually move into the centre. So while he's going really well for Freo, they (and Essendon!) had a greater need for him than the Swans.
"As everyone knows our style of football is defensive and unattractive, and as such I have completely forgotten how to mark or kick over the years" - Brett Kirk
..And the Swans are the Premiers...The Ultimate Team...The Ultimate Warriors. They have overcome the highly fancied Hawks in brilliant style. Sydney the 2012 Premiers - Gerard Whately ABC

If you've never jumped from one couch to the other to save yourself from lava then you didn't have a childhood
Barlow was Freo's first pick in the Rookie Draft who took him two picks before our first pick so that is why we couldn't consider him.
I've had a look a the Rookie Draft thread, Matthew Panos who went with Rookie Draft pick 47 to the Bulldogs was the one most forumites were keen on, no mention by anyone of Barlow.
Let's see if Panos makes the grade.
Excellent points. Lot of pre season chat about Panos, none about Barlow.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time
