It is a strange system really. As much as I think that Scott McLaren is a tool, it seems pretty tough to demote someone over one game (even if it includes one big blue). I could understand if the umpires boss (bigger tool that he is) came out and said McLaren has been performing well below his best for a number of weeks and is regularly making errors. In which case he should be retrained and given the chance to improve or moved on.
The idea that you have one bad game and go down to the minor leagues for a week (as punishment) is just strange.Comment

Big name scapegoat being made to pay for all the other bad decisions by other umps, such as that outrageous free to Fevola against LRT.

Yes there have been too many putrageous decisions lately!!
O/T: It was all to to with the first rushed behind under the new rule. He is the first one to enforce it, but unfortunately got it completely wrong.
Doubt he'll be missed much.Comment

I think any Umpire with a surname beginning with Mc should be banished forever...And the Swans are the Premiers...The Ultimate Team...The Ultimate Warriors. They have overcome the highly fancied Hawks in brilliant style. Sydney the 2012 Premiers - Gerard Whately ABC

For my mind there were 2;
1 - Calling Slattery for deliberate.
2 - Putting the mark in the Goal Square and not where the ball was rushed through.
Nitpicking though. McLaren was probably a scapegoat to keep the hungry hordes off Giecshen's desk.10100111001 ;-)Comment

His big problem was that it was Essendon who got the rough end of his dud calls. Ever since Hird called him out a few years ago (and paid $20k for the privilege) he has generally been very accommodating to them - the bombers have had nothing to fear from him umpiring their games. Saturday night was one big exception, and wham - out he goes!
I would be the last person to defend McLaren (the Swans have had many a raw deal from him) but he has been treated unjustly this time around I reckon. Every other week the umpires' useless boss has trotted out the old and tired "can't criticise umpires because it effects recruitment of them" baloney to swat away any criticism. They usually even go out of their way to justify the ridiculous (eg, the free against Mummy in the North game - worst call of the decade!) On the vary rare occasion the Giesch will acknowledge that an umpie made a mistake, but there has never been so public a dumping on one as this.
I imagine McLaren is in for a pretty torrid time first game back - and I reckon he won't be seen in Melbourne first game back or for a few thereafter. If he only 'gets a week' they'll try and hide him a bit - which makes him almost a cert for the Dogs/Swans game in Canberra (unfortunately for us)!Comment

I saw the "deliberate rushed behind" last night for the first time and I can't believe I'm saying this but McLaren was 100% correct. Slattery was under minimal pressure at best and had every opportunity to kick down the line or run it out. The AFL are again giving mixed signals on it's rule changes which is confusing both supporters and players...And the Swans are the Premiers...The Ultimate Team...The Ultimate Warriors. Considering how many games we have on Fox this year, if they were trying to hide him week-in, week-out, we would probably be the team most likely to get him. Although having said that, the results of the Richmond games have barely been in question this year - so that is where they should put McLaren if they wanted to lesson the potential for more controversy.I imagine McLaren is in for a pretty torrid time first game back - and I reckon he won't be seen in Melbourne first game back or for a few thereafter. The AFL have worded the rule really poorly (and Gieschen did not help with his latest comments). I think McLaren got it wrong, but terms like "benefit of the doubt" should not be brought into the equation, or the explanation, and yet that is how the rule has been set up.I saw the "deliberate rushed behind" last night for the first time and I can't believe I'm saying this but McLaren was 100% correct. There has always been some penalty for rushing a behind (the point awarded to the other team). The new rule was only brought in to stop players kicking it to themselves and then walking it back over the line after a kick-in (ala Hawthorn & Richmond), and to stop players from kicking it through the opposition goals from 20+ metres out (ala Mal Michael's efforts). It was never meant to be applied in the same way as that of the deliberate out-of-bounds rule. The AFL have just written the rule poorly and instructed their umpires, the players and the media worse. No wonder we have trouble working out what is going on!
The fact that it is called a "deliberate rushed behind" by commentators further exacerbates the problem - nearly all rushed behinds in a game are deliberate, that is their purpose - if they started calling them something like an, "illegal rushed behind" it might create less confusion.Comment
