It reminds of when teams used to not worry about robert harvey getting the ball because he never really hurt you with his possesions.

Robert Harvey won consecutive Brownlows. He polled 215 brownlow votes in his career of 383 games, second only to Gary Dempsey and ahead of Leigh Matthews. He also won 3 E.J Whitten medals and 4 club B&F's. Not bad for a hack.

By all means have an opinion, but I think you're being mighty harsh of McVeigh and Harvey.

Back onto the subject of the post. The problem with Jetta right now is he is going where the ball aint. We are at Round 8, he is a mature age footballer, and hasn't been close to a hard crunch in all of his 7 games that I have noticed. I don't buy the bit about having a rest. If he is to be left out it is on form and nothing else.

I agree. He had enviable chances in two Grand Finals to turn the game our way and sadly missed 3 very very gettable shots. He had his chances! I have forgiven him coz he is a great gutsy player who is a fantastic role model for 100% attack on the ball.

No its not! Not perhaps the winning goal after the siren etc (actually he did do that not too long ago come to think of it), but time and time again he has plucked a goal out of nowhere that has had us on our feet. Its generally unexpected, and on the run out of somewhere close to the boundary - witness That Goal in the 2003 Port PF which notified Port that they were stuffed - and yes, tends to set the tone for the rest of the match. He is just never called a Goal Kicker, and I wouldn't put my house on a set shot, but on the run, out of nowhere, unexpected, where did that come from, yes, he has shifted the game in our favour.

Just checked my TLM votes for this year - Jude Bolton is my highest votegetter so far. Before making my votes I rewatch each match, checking against the notes I made while watching live. I'm no expert but I am careful not to make votes based on my personal prejudice for or against any player. 2010 season - appears to me that Jude is performing, regardless of what he did or didn't do in previous years.

You are spot on. Jude was outstanding in the games before he got clobbered. Hopefully he has recovered fully now and can get back to that form.

2008: 104 clearances (2nd behind Kirk, who freakishly had the exact same number as 2007, 124), 4.3 per game (2nd again)
2009: 111 clearances (1st at the club), 5 per game (also 1st)
2010 so far: 25 clearances (3rd behind McVeigh and Kennedy), 3.6 per game (also 3rd)

Bolton has spent some time up forward in 2010, as well as stepping back and letting Kennedy do some of the work. Clearly though, his clearance work has been more than adequate, at least since 2007.

My argument is not game clearances but specifically centre clearances. My pet beef has been centre clearances as per many of my previous posts. Every match I watch very closely how we go on centre clearances and if we just improved it by 10% we would score more heavily. We get very few clean centre clearances for scores. I have no problem with his around the ground work. The point made by Primmy is that he has been a matchwinner and yes his past 2 seasons all round have been very good. I just happen to disagree on his matchwinning status.

McVeigh is getting there now, but up until a season and a half ago, he was used mainly as a tagger.

Right on the money. I maintain Goodes should contest every centre bounce regardless of his position. When we do get a clearance it is usually a scrappy or scrubby little kick that gives the opposing backs plenty of chances to clear.

Have to agree with putting Jetta up forward for a bit. Not at the games so can't understand why he doesn't get the ball more. He has exactly the pace, balance and delivery to be sensational out of the middle...but not till he knows where the ball is going.

Jude has been fantastic this year (till knocked out) and this coming form a long time bagger....have changed my opinion since he listened to my advice and stopped kicking 90% of his clearances over his shoulder to no one...now it's less than 50% :-)

In all seriousness it has been a major problem for us for 10 years that our clearances are scrappy...other teams seem to either have Abletts who bust straight through and into the clear or Dal Santos who can be there to receive and kick whilst facing the correct way! We really struggle to get that spare man to the right spot when it is scrappy in close.

Goodes belongs in the midfield at all times, IMO except when resting or we are desperate or there is a specific match up reason for 3 genuine talls (or more) in the fifty. Hasn't worked and I don't think it will in future. Robs us of our most effective clearance weapon.
