My impression from his media appearance is that he needed to get it out there so he could focus on his family and his game; the looming but untold truth was hindering him on both fronts. He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. 'Shocking' news - but at the same time not a great shock! He couldn't keep going much beyond this year or the next and it seems sort of right that he and Roosy hand over the reins at the same time. So a double 'celebration' - of two who have already achieved legendary status by their contributions to the success of the Swans this decade. Let's hope there can be a continuing role for him at the Swans - if that's what he wants of course. Re his announcement now - it must be so hard for a player to know that he will probably finish his career at the end of a year and yet keep that knowledge to himself, I can understand his desire to get it out there.

After most people bagged his abs photo at the start of the year, I'm not surprised he's retiring. As of next year, he can work on a bit of curvature of the belly. Then no one can laugh at his abs anymore. In memory of my little Staffy - Dicey, 17.06.2005 to 1.12.2011- I'll miss you mate.Comment

Yeah, so he plays with his heart....Officially on the Reid and Sumner bandwagon!Comment

Martin Flanagan's take:
Farewell to mighty leader
Kirk said, ''I'm like the dog that sticks its head out the window just to feel the wind going through his hair.'' That's bush Buddhism for you and one of footy's quotes of the year.Last edited by dimelb; 23 May 2010, 08:28 PM.He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team.
