My favourite memory of Brett is the QF we won against the Eagles in 2006, when he walked over to acknowledge the little group of Swans fans where I was sitting. We were going beserk and he was exhausted. The smile on his face said it all.

I have been lucky enough to follow the swanee's for years

My first champion who I just idolised and never thought there would be another was Bob Skilton, thought there would be no other like him, then along came Paul Kelly.

When he retired, again I though the same thoughts, but along came Brett Kirk, how lucky are have we been to have him play for us, just so deserving to be one of our premiership captains, well done Brett, such a inspiration.

I am wondering who my next inspiration will be???? Maybe Hannerbury!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Goodluck Brett, hope you stay around the Swans after you retire

        good timing

still a great !.......but last year and this year his lack of pace has been a little exploited..........

A legend who will still make a major contribution to 2010 season !

Kirky summerised what this club as come from, what has been created and the future it will create. Kirky mustered every living ounce of effort, skill and blood spliitting determination that his body could produce over his career. He literally has bled for this club, galvanised the team under the 'Bloods' ethos and will be leaving a culture that will hold us in great stead for years to come.

          Kirky...you are indeed a champion!
3Q time of the 2005 PF where he had the team in a huddle for quite a while and they came out and kicked 7 goals stands out for me, and he was pretty good in that quarter himself.

Absolutely Nico and also in the 2003 Qualifying Final against the Power in Adelaide when Byron Pickett put an absolute shirt front on Kirky and he bounced straight back up!

There will be few names as highly regarded as Brett Kirk and the #31 in the history of this club! Sad news today, but in true Kirk style you will use this to drive the group in their ambitions this year. As always, your timing is perfect! Lets go get em and get these boys inspired! You have inspired me throughout some tough years...... and myself and my family think you are a fantastic footballer, role model and person!

Kirky being the great team man, may have deliberatley released some cash under the cap to pick up a quality player out of contract next year.

Like everyone, Kirky has his faults, and perhaps he could have handled the BBB and Davis controversies better, but imo you can not fault him for his dedication, leadership and genuine will to be the very best player he could. If only some other AFL footballers (And footballers of all codes) would follow some of the standards he sets for himself, than the controversies such as the one that happened today with the Freo player might be averted.

To me, he will long live in the memory as a wonderful servant of the club, a fantastic player, and imo an excellent (if not even elite) midfielder. Sure he has his limitations, but he knew them and never ever did he not go out there, willing to do the best for his team and mates. He might not have saved us like Nick Davis did in 05 against Geelong, but I'm just as sure without Kirk we would not have lifted the Premiership cup either.

A class act imo, and will be sadly missed. I hope he is kept in and around the footy club though, preferably helping develop a replacement Kirky.

It just won't be the same in 2011 when he is gone!

What a legend of the club. His geniune passion to bring out the best in himself and the team has made me proud to be a swans supporter throughout his career. I even named my car after him. It's a beaten up 1990 red Camry with a white bonnet courtesy of a collision with a kangaroo a few years back. It just keeps going. I hope this isn't a bad omen for my car.

I heard he is quitting so we can keep the Cheese!

Seriously, just the ultimate role model for anyone in any endeavour ... he simply was never big enough, quick enough or skillful enough to achieve a fraction of what he has ... but he has! ... as they say at the club, he would run through a brick wall.

                        Inspirational.

Your car, my kitten. I shed a tear or 10 when I read the news and I'm certain that there will be many more flow when the day finally comes to say goodbye. Unlike last year, I'm not going to be around to see it, unless it's the big one.
I remember Kirky being absolutely destroyed in the North Albury Sports Club two days after his Hoppers won the Ovens & Murray grand final in 1999 and I've followed him (like everyone else) as he developed into one of the all time great leaders of the game and a true legend of the Swans and AFL.
It's yet another terrible day as the club prepares to bid farewell to a premiership hero, but this one is the greatest of them all. May Buddha be with you always Captain Kirk.

Brett, thanks for indicating your intentions of retiring at the end of the season.

After great thought, unfortunately I have to inform you that I have decided to reject your request.
In fact, I have to let you know that my decision goes further. Your services will be requred until real retirement age i.e. 55 years of age.

Frankly, I don't care if you will be playing in a zimmer frame, we will be wheeling you onto the ground for every match.

Regards and good luck for the next 22 odd seasons.

Why announce after rnd 8, though?
Why not wait till closer to the end of the season??

Is he hoping this will inspire the team for the next 13+ games??
