AFL Canberra Round 7: Ainslie v Reserves

    AFL Canberra Round 7
    Ainslie v Sydney Swans Reserves
    Saturday 29th May 2010 2.00pm
    Ainslie Oval

    Ladder
    Past Meetings
    2010
    R3 Reserves 21.19 (145) defeated Ainslie 15.12 (102)

Patty Veszpremi kicked 5 and Lewis Johnston and Trent Dennis-Lane 4 each as the Reserves overturned a 21 point half time deficit to win comfortably by 43 points. Dylan McNeil and Mike Pyke were the Swans' best players.

    2009
    R3 Reserves 16.15 (111) defeated Ainslie 17.6 (108)
    R7 Ainslie 17.13 (111) defeated Reserves 13.8 (86)
    R13 Reserves 19.23 (137) defeated Ainslie 12.11 (83)

    Recent Form
    Ainslie - LLLWW
    Reserves - WWWLW

    Last Round
    Belconnen 8.6 (54) defeated by Reserves 18.9 (117)
The Reserves led from start to finish, and their performance was hailed by coach Frosty McPherson as their best performance in 2 years.

    Ainslie 15.14 (104) defeated Tuggeranong 12.12 (84)
3 goals from Tim Inkster and great performances by John Holmes and Rob Shirley led Ainslie to a hard-fought 20 point victory.

    Team List
    • 7. Brett Meredith
    • 8. Trent Dennis-Lane (Senior emergency)
    • 10. Daniel Currie
    • 11. Ed Barlow
    • 13. Pat Veszpremi
    • 14. Craig Bird
    • 20. Sam Reid
    • 22. Byron Sumner
    • 23. Lewis Johnston
    • 27. Kristin Thornton
    • 28. Dylan McNeil
    • 36. Chris McKaigue
    • 45. Nathan Gordon
    • 46. Taylor Gilchrist

In: Craig Bird (return from injury)
Out: Jesse White (senior promotion) Matthew O'Dwyer (senior promotion)

Bird returns from his long term injury. Surprisingly, no Benny McGlynn again (or should that be unsurprisingly?) Thornton and Sumner had their first games last week and should be better for the run out.

    Scholarship Players
    • 44. Blake Guthrie
    • 50. Jay Lewis
    • 52. Mitch May

    In: Guthrie, Lewis
    Out: Jackson Potter

    Top ups
    • 55. Cameron Cobby (Queanbeyan)
    • 49. Justin Hodder (Belconnen)
    • 47. Khai McPherson (Tuggeranong)
    • 48 .Matthew Nicholas (Tuggeranong)
    • 51. Etiosa Okunbor (East Coast Eagles)
    • 54. Ryan Price (Queanbeyan)
    • 53. Joss Whitford (Belconnen)

    Reserves leading goalkickers
    • Trent Dennis-Lane 17
    • Henry Playfair 15
    • Pat Veszpremi 13

    • Daniel Currie 21

    Ainslie
Rob Shirley shut down Matt O'Dwyer in R3, and if recent form is any guide he should make a bee-line straight for the Dill (McNeil). They've desperately missed their centre half-forward Ben Hughes, who has been out since Round 3. Former SANFL forward Tim Inkster is their leading goalkicker with 10.

    Talking points
    • Which Reserves side will front up to Ainslie Oval? The dismal side which fell to bottom placed Tuggeranong 2 rounds ago, or the highly motivated side which thrashed reigning premiers Belconnen last week?
    • Can TDL follow up his 7 goal haul this week, and continue to press his claims for a senior debut? He might find it a little harder this week without Jesse White beside him.
    • The Curious Case of Pat Veszpremi, he was not amongst the best players again last week.
    • How will Dylan McNeil handle the tag of Robert Shirley? He has been very impressive in his form thus far, but this will be another step up.
    • How will Craig Bird fare in his first game back? How long before Roos starts considering him for senior selection?
    • Sam Reid, so impressive in his defensive post last week, might be forced to back up Daniel Currie in the ruck. If so, how will the Swans defence hold up without his presence?

After all these years, still manages to get himself up to perform. What a legend.

PS. Another great preview Ugg, well done.

Anyone know what's happening with Meredith? Doesn't appear to be on any injury lists and isn't playing in the reserves.

Thank's a lot Ugg. Legend status. And may I say BEAUTifully presented.

Thanks ugg, as always. Very much appreciated.
I get the impression that these reserves are going to continue pressure for firsts selection.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

Point.....oh dear, perhaps they don't want to test his quads (?) on a wet track, and they have been predicting cyclonic conditions up from the south over the weekend, haven't they.

You still attending if it starts raining/hailing/snowing Ugg?

A shame we don't have a decent media in Sydney to ask what's wrong with McGlynn. What a joke.
