I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his timeComment

It finished in a drawComment

Swans 7.8 (50) Ainslie 6.14 (50)
Meredith 3 goals
Barlow 43 disposals
Bird 36 disposals

Nice to see Bird in the possessions. If he puts in a repeat performance next week, he'll be right in contention, but I wouldn't want him coming in next week.
EdBarlow, EdBarlow, wherefore art thou EdBarlow? I still haven't written Cheese off, and he keeps performing at Canberra level, but then comes into the seniors and flops. I just want to know either way! If he doesn't make it, he doesn't make it, if he does, then fantastic, but it's the not knowing that's driving me insane!Officially on the Reid and Sumner bandwagon!Comment

Probably a bit too soon Scott, he should run around in the reserves for at least another week or 2 for match fitnessComment

Thanks ugg, good work.
The best players I was pleased to see were Currie and Veszpremi. Glad the others showed too, and they ought to in that company, but I want to see the Vesz back in the ones and a fit Currie ready to rock and roll in the big time.He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. This is by no means a match report, I'll leave that to the experts! ... just some observations.
Cool and overcast at Ainslie (beautiful little ground and club set up there!), and it turned into an arm wrestle after the rain set in. With a pretty young side, including physically, the Swans were very much up against it in the conditions. The ball turned into a bar of soap, and the slog suited the far more mature bodies of the locals. Good to see that none of the youngsters shirked their job, and the senior guys led them by example.
The "good" Cheese was on display, and he was as hard at the ball as you would love him to be every week! ... really put his head over it and body on the line. A thousand possessions, and no reason he couldn't do that at the next level ... someone tell him!
Birdy was a step ahead of the rest with plenty of early possessions ... once match fit he will not be seeing much more of Canberra this season.
Meredith is too good for this league.
Currie was a tower of strength, and seemed to relish the challenge of being one of the more mature players out there. Really liked his work around the ground, and at ground level, in unsuitable conditions he never stopped.
McKaigue looked at home when the rain came, and he will be a player ... sure hands, good decisions, and real pace (reminds me of someone with less hair, but a similar brogue?)
McNeill keeps doing all the 1 percenters, whilst Veszpremi seemed to be limited by an injury he picked up early.
Not a game for the kids to shine, but Hodder and Price of the young local top ups did some nice things, and the scholarship players didn't let anyone down.
Neither side will be happy, and the silence was deafening after the final kick, but a real contested game of wet weather footy, and a draw seemed a fair outcome.Comment

Well done Uncon. Much appreciated.
It is always frustrating to see Good Cheese, isn't it. Its not being transported up the rungs, and when you see just how good he COULD be, you just want to shake him (or at least I do grrrr). The window of opportunity is not going to be open for him forever.
Prior request on observations on McKaigue would have had me saying he looked lost and out of his depth, so thrilled to see your report on him for this game. Particularly great for Merry, and Birdy. McNeill is a bit of a treasure and I agree, his one percenters are a highlight; he doesn't have to be told.
Something must have clicked with Curry; fantastic to see he is playing like he IS a tower of strength. It sounds as if he and it would seem most of the other ressie boys remembered this was actually a game....and it should be enjoyed. I would put that down to Frosty's touch.
Kind of sorry I missed the game! rain and all.If you've never jumped from one couch to the other to save yourself from lava then you didn't have a childhoodComment

Thanks, Ugg, great preview.
Thanks unconfuseme, terrific observations. Agree with everything you wrote.
McKaigue did some good stuff last week but today in the wet he was a master. Could really see why we signed him. Lewis Johnston looked good at times, too. Didn't see much of TDL except for one passage when he attempted a mark, was spoilt from behind, held then pushed/tripped forward and the Ainslie player came down on top of him (looked like on his head from my angle) and TDL was up on his feet and chasing again - all described here took 5 seconds. Confirmed my opinion from last week that he is tough, fast, agile.
I think our main problem today was that Ainslie seemed to have an uncanny knowledge of where the ball was going to be, and because we weren't always manning up, Ainslie players got to it first - caught us napping several times.
Only saw the 2nd half in the rain, but how good was the surface of the Ainslie oval? Went along to get some mud shots but none to be had.
But got a few keepers...
