Fascinating how the Swans' low-key experiment with Pyke has become a benchmark for the new league recruiting strategy. Once again the Swans show the way.The man who laughs has not yet heard the terrible newsComment

I have never seen Pyke mentioned in any article about Hunt/Folau/Inglis/whoever else unless it'coming from the Swans' camp; so I'd hardly say Pyke is the benchmark for the League recruiting strategy.Comment

This article is a non-event.
AFL teams recruiting "athletes" was massive in the 90's...but I thought everyone decided it was a bad idea. This is a marketing drive, pure and simple. For guaranteed success, this is not the path, however it will get alot of NSWelshmen and Queenslanders with no interest in football watching the game. The eternal connundrum "what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object" was finally solved when David Hasselhoff punched himself in the face.Comment

I watched the big Pyke-let @ AAMI and one thing I noticed was that, although his first instinct seemed to be to handball, he was quickly prepared to kick when no handball receive options presented themselves. Much improved IMO. And his kicking looked good! Looked really comfortable in the warm up too.
And Pikey and Mummy would have to be two of the scariest tacklers running around.... can you imagine a "gang-tackle" laid by these two in the centre square? There would have to be an undertaker warming the bench!
I'm not sure you can compare Mike with the GC17 & GWS recruits either. Mike is not only physically mature and impressively athletic, like the other two, but he is also very tall. Thus, even without being able to rapidly develop the footskills and play reading desired in a league footballer, his height makes him an immediate ruck prospect. Neither of the other two will have this luxury, I'd have thought.Comment

Folou is worth $9M????? Theo Dimwit should try some of my drugs. His clearly aren't working.
I think it's disgusting that they've offered someone who has never kicked a Sherrin get that much money over established players. The Players Association should jump up and down over this ... or start paying the same wages for everyone else.
Damned disgusting.Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones who let in the light.Comment

The sad thing is Annie, Vlad has somehow convinced the majority of drones down here that the decision to pay folou is worth every cent in terms of marketing. Anyone who dares question what why so much needs to be spent on folou gets shot down with ridicule. The marketing has been huge..problem is it's been in the wrong state and market.
Even Craig Hutchison shoots anyone down who thinks it's absurd.
There is a big school of thought down here that the AFL can not do any wrong with this.
Sad really.Comment

People who know better know that the AFL do do wrong. They're going to piss so much hard-earned television money up the wall introducing the blacktown bogans into the comp. When they fold three years after they start, I'll be the first down at AFL House to tell them I told you so.Comment

the publicity that GWS have gotten from this has done NOTHING but good for game in western sydney... they wont fold, not even close.... in fact GWS could easily take over the swans as NSW #1 team because there are purely way more people out west who love to follow sport.Comment
