No way GWS will fold as they will be bankrolled by the AFL for a generation if necessary. With the recruiting rules/concessions bing given to GC17 and GWS, we need to be seriously scared about how good these two teams will be within 3-4 years of them starting in the AFL.

So if as expected they are very good on field, off field success will come more easily and quicker - corporates love a winner.

The Swans have had on field success since 1996 and our finances aren't exactly robust. With so many sporting teams in this city scrambling for the corporate dollar it will be tough with another mouth to feed. The AFL as you say will have to bankroll GWS for a very long time.
..And the Swans are the Premiers...The Ultimate Team...The Ultimate Warriors. They have overcome the highly fancied Hawks in brilliant style. Sydney the 2012 Premiers - Gerard Whately ABC

I think the rivalry that will develop between us and GWS will be good fun. Already the thought of beating them to a pulp is nearly as good as the thought of pumping the pies.

Bwa ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
Sheeds was on the news last week telling everyone how he's going to tap into the islander market.
Has he had a good look at the size of the average Samoan man? Each one is approximately the size of three Craig Boltons.

It's taken Freo how many years to get to within cooee of the top of the ladder?

3-4 years for the blacktown bogans?

GWS differs from all the introduced teams. Most of the teams introduced in the past had some connection with either a WAFL or SAFL league.

GWS is owned soley by the AFL..its a corporate club it has nothing to do with traditions and all to do with a business. In 5 years time they will be known as a former melbourne team sans "melbourne" in them. North i am looking at you.

Freo got nothing like the concessions being given to GC17 & GWS plus Freo made some of the dumbest initial recruiting decisions but GC17 and GWS won't make those mistakes. If you understand the draft system, just convert the picks being given to the two new teams to any draft this decade and you will see what powerful teams they would have had. At one go they will get 15-20 first round picks and no other current team has that amount of talent, even the tankers Melbourne only have 13 first rounders.

I just hope that Four Corners gets to expose what is happening in the AFL before Sydney Swans collapse under the weight of corporate greed, big business non ethics, personal bias etc, etc, etc.

                        Brisbane Bears?

Strange argument KKS, start a team and then build tradition and history. It is the AFL and NOT the VFL expanded.

GWS wont fail, simply because they wont be allowed to fail. The AFL have the money to back them, so they will do that for as long as it takes. The AFL's TV rights are coming up again and while they probably wont get the 200Mill a year they are after, it's certainly not going to go backwards.

Plus the concessions given to GC and GWS are amazing, they should develop good sides. The only comparison would be West Coast, who were given full access to Western Australia for 2 years between Oct 86 and Oct 88, and limited pre draft local picks up until 1991. They made the finals in their 2nd year, Grand Final in their 5th year, premiership in their 6th. The amount of time and careful management going into GWS and GC, along with the draft picks and access to existing talent should ensure a pretty rapid rise I'd say.

I find all the talk from the ex players now commentators to be a bit egotistical.
Their implication that the rugby players will be no good for the first 3 - 5 years smacks of an inflated sense of an AFL players' abilities.

These guys are athelets, who come from a game which uses roughly the same shaped ball and also contains many of the skills required for an AFL player.

                              Can't kick?
                              Can't make it in AFL?
                              tell taht to Dunkley.
                              Tell that to Jude.

Once they adapt to the increased cardio requirements, and pick up some basic skills, I would suggest that they'd get a game in most sides.

I like the idea of these guys crossing over.

It sure won't happen the otehr way (AFL players going to rugby) because their game is very crap in comparison.
Right now it's about money - wait until these guys get into the game, and it becomes about playing the game.
                              Then it will be exciting...
The difference between insanity and genius is measured only in success.
