AFL Canberra Round 13: Ainslie v Reserves

    AFL Canberra Round 13
Ainslie Kangaroos v Sydney Swans Reserves
    Saturday 17th July 2010 2.00pm
    Ainslie Oval

A top of the table clash.

    Ladder
    Past Meetings
    2010
    R3 Reserves 21.19 (145) defeated Ainslie 15.12 (102) @ Sydney Cricket Ground

Patty Veszpremi kicked 5 and Lewis Johnston and Trent Dennis-Lane 4 each as the Reserves overturned a 21 point half time deficit to win comfortably by 43 points. Dylan McNeil and Mike Pyke were the Swans' best players.

    R7 Ainslie 6.14 (50) drew with Reserves 7.8 (50) @ Ainslie Oval

A low-scoring affair in tough conditions. A few in-game injuries allowed Ainslie to come back in the last quarter and take away 2 points. Brett Meredith kicked 3 in a best on ground performance, Daniel Currie was superb rucking the whole game and Ed Barlow provided drive from the half-back line

    2009
    R3 Reserves 16.15 (111) defeated Ainslie 17.6 (108) @ Sydney Cricket Ground
    R7 Ainslie 17.13 (111) defeated Reserves 13.8 (86) @ Manuka Oval
    R13 Reserves 19.23 (137) defeated Ainslie 12.11 (83) @ Sydney Cricket Ground

    Recent Form
    Reserves - WWWWW
    Ainslie - WLWWL

    Last Round
    Reserves 20.20 (140) defeated Tuggeranong 9.6 (60)

A strong first quarter where the Reserves kicked 7 goals to none set up an emphatic victory. Jesse White provided a fantastic aerial display and was rewarded with 8 goals. Sam Reid, in the absence of Daniel Currie, excelled in the ruck for the first time while Lewis Jetta turned on the style and speed in a very impressive second half.

    Queanbeyan 11.10 (76) defeated Ainslie 6.15 (51)

A disappointing result as a victory would have cemented Ainslie's place in the Top 4.

    Ainslie
    • 5. Ben Hughes - The Kangaroos Centre Half-forward only recently returned to football after a major injury. He has struggled thus far, only posting 2 goals in his 3 games since his return but is capable of big hauls and the Swans defence will have to watch him closely.
    • 24. Rowan Andrews - 25 year old ruckman has starred in his 3rd season at Ainslie being named in the best list an equal-team high 9 times and should give Currie a good contest.
    • 14. Michael Ghobrial - Tough experienced defender who marshals the Ainslie defence well. The Ainslie backline are the most stingy in the competition conceding 2 points less than the Swans.

    Talking points

    • Jetta - Rusty first half last week where he looked out of touch, but a much improved second half performance managed to push him back into senior contention. I feel he is one good game away from being re-injected back into the senior side.
    • Veszpremi - See last week.
    • Currie - Listed with a foot injury on the injury list, has the burden of carrying the ruck load taken its toll?
    • McKaigue - Three straight games that he has been named in the best list. Does a fourth beckon?
    • Reid - Has starred up forward, down back and in the ruck. It has been a consistently impressive season by the youngster. Likely to find himself down back this week, probably on Hughes, due to Richards's and Heath's absences and the return of Currie in the ruck.

The two clashes with the Kangaroos have been hard-fought affairs. In the Round 3 clash at the SCG, Ainslie took a shock 21 point lead into half time before finally succumbing to the fast finishing Reserves side. The reverse fixture in Round 7 turned out to be a low scoring affair, Ainslie just fell short of snatching a priceless victory after a comeback last quarter. This game should be a good hitout for the Reserves, after a couple of big victories in recent rounds.

Thanks again Ugg, a remarkable piece of work and observation, really appreciated. TDL not mentioned although he's now not in the seniors?

Will they take Jesse to Melbourne? With Roos wanting him to string a run of consistently good games together in the reserves and with him being strategically important in the long run - structurally speaking - surely they would want him to play a game this weekend?

I was also surprised to see him not on the reserves team list considering that the reserves have a bye next week.

They would have to take 1 emergency to Melbourne I imagine. How do we find out who it is/was?

Really looking forward to Nipper and Sam R (and Currie for that matter) continuing the awesome centre bounce relationship they struck up last week! Was a huge positive in last weeks win! Will miss Pottsy from the scholarship ranks also. Looking forward to the game. Ugg = legend.

Once4 again thanks ugg. And Liz.

I see Emerey and Kruger didn't get a gig this time round. They all look to be locals, except perhaps the guy from Tathra (that hotbed of afl players).

Would particuarly like to know of Sam Reid's game. He was in the ruck most of last week, and I don't think that is his 'normal' positgion. I seem to remember a kpp, up back.

Thornton wasn't in last week, so expect injury or flu...was he at the kids day out?

Swans getting worse if that is possible. 34 points down at final change. Just two goals in that quarter, again. Both to Johnston

Thanks ugg for the overview and the relentless flow of depressing information! That's an astonishing turnaround. Surely it wasn't just because a couple of useful players weren't there; I'd imagine the listed players who were there should have been enough to put up a better show than that. I am now curious to hear from other ressie watchers and read the official post mortem.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)
