Did you read today's Herald Sun? Melbourne will make the 8 and sadly we are gone. It is not pessimism, it is realism. Just wait 5 weeks.

However, looking at the previous 16 matches before Sunday as a whole, and looking at the age and experience of many of their real quality players, suggests it ain't gonna happen. 'Realism' in today's ultra-professional game, is that they only need to be 10% off the performance we saw on Sunday, and they'll lose to Brisbane or Richmond.Comment

Melbourne only need to win 3 more games than us, (and a few other results fo there way) and there in.
The HS had us winning only the Brisbane game, and Melbourne losing only one.
As we've seen with some of the results this weekend and over the last few weeks, there is not many sure things in footy.Comment

Get on Melbourne for 2010 Premiers! That seems to be the run of thinking now. I thought they were the team that wouldn't win a game this season? Or have I missed a week or two?
There seems to be general confusion between being a great team and playing a great game. A week ago we were coming off a very good game and everything seemed possible. This week it's Melbourne's turn. I wouldn't been surprised if the Lions beat the Dees this week. It's the nature of young teams. The impressive thing with Freo was not that they played so well but that they did it for so long. How about the Crows - beat the Cats, lost to Port?
Despite our disappointment, the Swans aren't as bad as they looked on Sunday; the Dees aren't as good as they appeared. It was disturbing how quickly we capitulated and it will be interesting to see how quickly we regroup. It's hard to see us beating the Cats but stranger things have happened - I watched the Crows/Cats game. Like most teams we're not consistently good; we're not consistently bad. It would have been fair to expect us to be in the top group with our best 22 on the field. But we're experimenting and that's exciting, too. Heartbreaking when it all falls apart, though. Ideally we make the most of our chances and make finals (we should, as SimonH pointed out better than any media I've seen) and the perfect end to the season would be to win a final (or two!)
Like last year, we can only watch to see how the Swans' team of the future is looking. (I expect Ted and Bevan will be part of that, just as other non-stars have been in good teams forever.) But this year we have the extra excitement that finals are on the cards - thanks to the efforts at the start of the season when the kids were fresh and our best players were all in the team. We so need our middle-aged players to step up in the these final weeks because so far we've seen the best efforts from the seniors and then the juniors while many of those in the middle have gone missing when the going has got tough.Last edited by Go Swannies; 27 July 2010, 03:19 PM.Comment

The classic tale of "this week's favourite" is those commentators suggesting that Norf will take our spot (like Luke Darcy on OWAAT). Given that we both lost games we should have won on the weekend, our position should be just the same as it was before last week's fixtures - so, unless they were declaring they were out of the 8 after our win against the Blues, their diagnosis is inconsistent.
I think this year more than most ladder predictors are as useful as chicken entrails.Comment

It never really works as predicted though by these so called 'experts'....I think people are getting a little carried away with melbourne. I have said this in another thread they are not as good as what they were the other day. I have seen them a few times this yeah and sure they have improved but we were just TERRIBLE and made them look a hell of alot better! I actually think brisbane will beat them this week up at the gabba.
I think we'll finish eighth which will probably see us in Perth against Freo.Comment

I would love to see Melbourne turn on yesterday's performance again for the next 5 weeks in a row. Regardless of what it did to our final 8 prospects. It would just be magic to watch, and a Cinderella story for the finals.

brisbane simply don't know what they're doing at the moment and richmond have come off their high.Comment

Excellent post and I couldn't agree more. It's amazing how intelligent and reasoned a post seems when you agree with it...Today's a draft of your epitaphComment
