I don't know about you guys but I am sick to bloody death of being spoken down to and putting up with innane comments from Melbourne commentators. Examples:

Less than a minute left in the 3rd quarter, we kick a goal and we hear, 'That will buy some breathing space for the Swans.' Breathing space? We lead by 30 points at that stage.

The end of the 3rd quarter Jetta kicks a goal after the siren and we are told, '...the Sydney crowd doesn't know as much as we do about Afl...they thought it was a goal.' At the game the roar of the crowd was like the swell of a wave. Up it went till we all heard the siren then we returned to hoping the young bloke would do it next quarter.

Finally, being interviewed after the game he (Jetta) was nearly cutoff in his last thoughts by a fool who was not listening to the young man speak.

Surely in Australia's greatest city, this great game could have Sydney callers and commentators...not blokes that played for us, but people who live here and love the team.

I wholeheartedly agree. I IQ every one of our games and the commentary 98% of the time is dreadful.
Get Luffy and Seymour off MMM and onto the tele I say!

A few times recently, while people have been commentating on the overall low standard of TV commentating, I have reflected on Grybas.

At the time of his death, he was (rightly) lauded for his polish and professionalism, both as a presenter and as a commentator. Yet none of his peers seemed to take the opportunity to analyse just why he was so good or to aspire to reach that level. I don't think Grybas had any unique characteristics that made him so good. He wasn't an ex-player, endowed with special understanding of the game at the top level. He just worked hard, prepared well, and understood his role was to enhance the viewing experience, not try to take it over. He also understood what it meant to be "neutral" as a commentator. I don't think anyone listening to his calls, or seeing him interview someone, would have been able to fathom which club his heart lay with. Surely this can't be such a hard thing to achieve for a professional media person?

The worst thing about Jettas goal is that Kelli Underwood was calling it.

However, it made the highs and lows on ABC radio on Sunday and has been the most shown highlight of the round on TV that I have seen in Melbourne.

I actually thought that Underwood is very very very slowly improving. Maybe in a couple of years time she will be bearable.

I really miss Grybas as well. His call of the Elimination final in 05 against Geelong was simply brilliant, especially considering the clowns he had in the commentary box with him. The bunch of commentators going around at the moment are ordinary to say the least. However, I don't mind the ABC radio Saturday arvo team though, they don't do a bad job most of the time.

I know I'm being pedantic, but that was a Semi Final against Geelong. We didn't play an Elimination Final in 05 or 06

I must confess my ignorance though in that I cannot remember ever hearing Grybas call a game. It has never been my habit to listen to the radio calls.

Kelli was far worse, she needed to be corrected on numerous occasions by the other supposed commentators. Please Kelli learn the players names.

The opening post has a touch of Sydney Vs Melbourne about it.
I mean come on, to claim commentators from Melbourne are crap, and that they should be replaced with guys that are in Sydney?!
And then to label Sydney as the greatest city in Australia.

Not to open a can of worms, but to me, that's like people wanting Gillard as PM purely on gender.

A good commentator is a good commentator, regardless of location.
