    Mike Pyke

Excuse me if this has already come up in the match review... Mike put in two great pieces in the last quarter, one led to a shanked behind, the next a minute or two later, to Sydney's thirteenth goal.

His rugby instincts hit in, he tucked the ball under one arm and shoved Blues out of his way with the other. AFL players do not expect that. In a few seconds he set up the winning goal.

Mike Pyke as a secret weapon? Imagine this, 33 minutes on the clock in the Grand Final, Sydney four points down, Mike shoves Dane Swan onto his fat bum and handpasses to TDL in the goalsquare, siren blows as the ball flys between the big sticks.

He'd certainly be in line for the most inmproved award this year. At least by a foreigner, anyway.
There are still some slight flaws in his game, but he's definitely ironed a lot out.

Tap work was really good when it matterred, some wonderful assists and seemed to not be daunted when the going got tough in the last quarter. Unbelieveable improvement from someone who has played the game for two years. Think about it - not just played at AFL level, played the game full stop.

I admire the fact that he can get down and dirty from his great height, and find space for a fairly terrible handball (lets be realistic), but its getting to be effective! Hard worker, that's for sure. Love watching Macca riding shotgun. Its like the colt looking after the carthorse!

And according to the stats, best tap-to-advantage percentage.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

6 inside 50's equal highest for the Swans.

i just wonder come next year whether there will be room for all 3 in the team - seaby, mumford and pyke. You wouldn't think so, but maybe one of them could be a tall forward if we are lacking with injuries then.

You would be mad to go into a full AFL season thinking that just two genuine ruckmen will be enough!! Three is good, four even better!

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

Nice! He DOES seem to know where he's tapping to - doesn't just hit and hope.

That's true from our perspective, but both Seaby and Mumford joined us because they thought they had a good chance at being our first choice ruckmen, and both expected to get a lot of first team footy. With the rate that Pyke is improving, its hard to imaine him not getting more starts.

Seaby signed a three year contract, Mummy a four year deal and Pykey has just renewed for two. If the Swans aren't thinking about how to use all three of them for the next two years, then they are crazy.

Rotate them through the forward line and Bench. Pyke down back FT even.

A full back that can also ruck. Great idea.
