What happens if it is a draw next week?

Persuant to AFL rules, they keep on going. At some point the MCG will be unavailable due to the Cricket Season (The ground is always booked by the AFL for the week after the 1st Grand Final as a precaution), so I guess the Grand Final would be moved to Victoria Park, Docklands,Princes Park, or even Kardinia in a pinch. They'll keep playing every Saturday at 2:30pm until one side is winning after 120 minutes.10100111001 ;-)Comment

I had a feeling something like this could be on at half time (not the draw obviously, but the closeness of the result!), as much as I think they've had a terrific season, Collingwood had a lot of younger players with <50 games experience, coming up against a team that knows all about the pain of losing grand finals from last year... they had to bury the Saints when they had the chance (And didn't we find this out the hard way two weeks ago... for the record, I don't think we would have been strong enough to get close to the Pies this year had we made it to the GF). I'm not sure who this favours, actually -- Collingwood are probably in better shape and will benefit from the experience, but St Kilda will feel like they escaped with a draw since they trailed for much of the game.
It was a sensational last quarter, though. Reminded me of 2005-06.Last edited by Xie Shan; 25 September 2010, 07:39 PM.Comment

It can't be too late yet - they haven't even played! I'd agree if they changed their minds today - or after another drawn match next weekend - but everyone will go into the match knowing the scenario.Comment

Agree... shame the brain dead idiots at the AFL didn't change this a long time ago. Grand Final day deserves a winner. How good would have extra time have been today?..And the Swans are the Premiers...The Ultimate Team...The Ultimate Warriors. They have overcome the highly fancied Hawks in brilliant style. True....but everyone new the rules at the start of the season too. One of the biggest problems with this game is that the AFL constantly fiddle with the rules on all levels at any old time when it suits them. Dermie on SEN Melb said last night that our game is unique in that the season is not decided by a penalty shootout. Sure it would be exciting but AFL grand finals are a war of attrition and wars are never decided by penalty shootouts. If no one wins the battle you retreat, lick your wounds, bury the dead (Leon Davis) and get ready to charge in again. This is a tough sport, it should stay that way.Comment

Torn. Thats what I am. Toooorrrn.....it should be finished now. Overtime ten minutes each way. But what a bloody game......and some of the kings barely had a crowning moment......whattha Davis? What happened to Michael Gardener, does that mean Ben MacEvoy gets a gig next week? Or do they have to play the same team? Anyone?Last edited by Primmy; 26 September 2010, 07:57 AM.If you've never jumped from one couch to the other to save yourself from lava then you didn't have a childhoodComment

Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

However, you cannot just keep going with replay upon replay if (in the unlikely event) no-one manages to secure a win the second week around. It would still be a war (in AFL terms) - two huge battles in successive weeks and then extra time (they would never have a penalty shoot-out). That is about as big as it gets in sporting competitions.
There is a heap of pressure being put on the AFL now in regards to this rule, so I wouldn't be surprised if they changed it - but I hope they don't.
In another thread, somewhere around here, someone suggested they should give premiership medallions to all the players who played for that team during the season (which I think is a great idea - or alternatively, for normal GF years the club should have victory medals made for their entire playing list). However, this becomes more pertinent with changes to the two teams of Collingwood and St Kilda for next week. If a player misses next week through injury and their team gets up, I hope he is still involved on match day (victory stand, etc).Comment
