I'm Happy for Stewie to step up off the field but please don't let him lose the runner role. His almost psychic ability to marshal troops, congratulate the youngsters and dictate play without actually being in the team has been one of our strong points for years. You can't tell me he is merely relaying instructions-He's playing Chess out there with human pieces! I think half the reason Roosy came down to the bench was to make sure everyone saw that he was actually involved with the coaching and that Stewie Maxfield shouldn't be the one earning the big bikkies.

As for coaches, I'd love to see Stewie. He seems to have so much respect from the playing group.
Centre clearances = When the ball is bounced in the centre square after a goal or start of a quarter. The clearance refers to the side that moves it into their forward line from a clean possession = clean kick or handpass to advantage.

We get belted in this task almost every week because we have had a strategy of trying to stop the other team from doing so by holding or blocking their path. We gave away too many frees for holding and our players have an inability to read the play or be first to the ball, or indeed make the ball their objective. We rarely have a player in position to take a clean handpass if we get one. We allow other clubs to have a free player on their defensive side out of their 3 midfielders who are in the square, resulting in a set play for them to handball backwards to the free player, because the other 2 just make the ball their objective (Ablett, Selwood). We fall for it almost every week.

If by some fluke we get our hands on the footy first our clearance is not often on the run which results in a scrubby kick to nowhere. There was one game later in the year when Jack and Hannaberry played in there together and went straight for the footy with amazing results. Goodes seems to be the one person who gets the clean running centre clearance, but he played in the main up forward.

If we are to take advantage of a fit Bradshaw in 2011 we must fix this immediately. Get it out early and quick and he gets a real chance to get his hands on it because he reads the play so well. Most clubs work on a few goals per week from clean, quick, centre clearances. If we do then we do it very poorly. How good was Judd at ready the ball at centre bounces in the final?

At the start of the 3rd quarter on Saturday the Dogs just slaughtered us for 3 quick goals. In the Melbourne game right from the first bounce we were absolutley pumped with the first goal coming in seconds.

I get tired of watching others sides get first hands on the footy at centre bounces.

                              Ummmmmmmmmm, cough, cough.

We were ranked 2nd in first possesions and 4th in clearances and contested possesions in 2010.

When you break that down against our direct opponents for the year we were 2nd for first possession, 2nd for clearances and 1st for contested possessions.

I am not sure that is an area we particularly need to improve.

Raw numbers can be misleading because of the number of ruck contests the Swans compete at each game. I don't think it's as big a problem as Nico makes out though.
