That was an excellent summary, it nailed all the points that needed to be addressed I thought.

Loved the fact he referred to Derek Hine's involvement in the working group that led to the creation of the academies.

A great and accurate article by a non Swans person. If any club shouldn't be carrying on about equality it's Collingwood who through massive membership and profits can do far more than any other club off field. The AFL also looks after them embarassingly well regarding signal dates and not travelling interstate.

Maguire has acted like a spoilt brat for a decade and unfortunately due to his unique position holds sway over the AFL too much. They really need to tell him to butt out and let the AFL decide what is good for the greater game.

Liz, this whole thing must be playing havoc with you as I noticed you were defending the academies at 3.15am on BF! Your arguements are full of common sense facts that we here fully understand but gee the general AFL population on forums are fairly stupid and/or one eyed idiots.

Plus the Academy is the other side of COLA. Maguie is arguing that it's unfair to have the COLA to compensate for 90% of our players coming from interstate and also unfair to fund the development of local players out of our own pocket.

AS Colless said, Maguire and others had no problems with the COLA (or the Academy) when the Swans weren't winning.

Plus let's not forget Brisbane Lions have had 19 players go home to southern states in recent years.

A good article from Paige Cardona. I'd add a small correction: I think "So while Eddie is pushing, it?d be reminiscent of the football world to push back." should read ... it'd be remiss of the football world not to push back."

I believe she gets to the heart of the matter towards the end: "This is a national competition, not a Victorian one, Ed." As I've said elsewhere, the problem is not too many clubs in the game, but rather too many clubs in Victoria. Eddie is probably a good president for Collingwood, and on that level fair play to him; but as a senior member of the AFL nationwide, he is a toxic presence.

And well said Andrew Pridham, taking over where Richard Colless left off.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

Paige's article is quite good, although I think she is mistaken when she suggests the appearance of high end talent from NSW is unprecedented.
Because that's what the original Rams project was starting to produce (Hayes, McVeigh, Davis etc.) just before the insular Victorians had it, then the Swans original development mandate shut down.
And just as now, Eddie let the fight. Like the wise man says "If you look at your history books you'll see, the same thing happens again and again."

Noting old Jellyback Mike Fitzpatrick has said nothing on this subject. Probably the commission needs an overhaul to ensure at least 50% are not Victorian

I should also mention that Paige is a passionate Collingwood supporter...giving even more weight to the article in my view

Great article. One of the most poignant points was the fact that 80% of the youth comes from Victoria yet the Victorian clubs only make up 10 of the 18 sides (about 55%). The Victorian clubs are always going to get some of the interstate players returning. Typically clubs like Collingwood, Geelong and Hawthorn benefit from this more so than Bulldogs. Is this equality?

I'm unsure why anyone is including Dunkley in the argument however. Totally irrelevant. We'll be using our best available draft pick on him if he nominates us.

                                Emma Quayle's article:

                                Isaac Heeney (NSW/ACT, midfielder)

The best, most complete onballer in the draft to this point. Might be the best, most complete player in it. Smart, aware, organised, gutsy and always seems to play well early. Will go first round to Sydney as a Swans Academy player.

                                Abe Davis (NSW/ACT, utility)

Hard not to notice, given his size (193cm) and athleticism. Can interrupt play with a gutsy mark, has good hands and attacks the game. Very limited pre-season so only just getting going, too. Will more than likely go to the Swans as an Academy player.

Good wraps on these two boys...interesting about Davis having a limited pre-season, I wasn't aware of that at all.
