Swans Academy and player watch

Is it fare to say that the academy is having a golden run at the moment? We have Lloyd Perris on the rookie list this year. We have potentially two recruits this year and one the year after.
There might be years when the Swans don't take any academy recruits onto their list.
If the Swans academy were scouting the nation and recruiting the best 14 year old players in the country by offering boarding scholarships to elite Sydney a Private Schools, then the competition may be upset.Comment

The problem with the standard of players at he moment is caused by the number of teams in the AFL. Six teams have been added to the AFL and the only teams to have left Melbourne are Fitzroy and us. It's the number of Melbourne teams which are causing the issues; lack of talent and lack of supporters/income. Maybe Collingwood should be forced to merge with the Dogs?
We were aware that Eddie was going to have a go at our academies and now he's confirmed it; "I will put up another one that is going to become a very vexed topic for the next two years - and that is the academies that Brisbane and Sydney have got,".
He had a win with the COLA but I really don't think that he will win on this one. The development of the NSW and Qld markets are imperative to the long term success of the AFL. The number of AFL players coming out of NSW and Qld is minuscule compared to the numbers in the southern and western states and our states need to be promoted. I can't see this happening. If the academies are either shut down or run by the AFL as they will lose their effectiveness. It's also the Swans who are paying for it (not sure about the other academies). I believe the AFL only contributes about $700k p.a. yet the other clubs can benefit from our funding of this program.Comment

I wouldn't underestimate his influence.
His arguments are often unfounded and unbalanced, but he will be relentless(his strongest trait).
He will bang on and on , in the media, at every given opportunity, garnering public support with his misrepresentation.
And when Heeney, or one of the other academy recruits, has a big game, he will declare a huge injustice.
He's unlikely to have the academy scrapped, but he'll get it watered down, or allow outside clubs some sort of access....
IMO, he won't stop until he gets some sort of concession.Last edited by ernie koala; 22 June 2014, 03:57 PM.Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MTComment

I have been following the footy for about 55 years. As I recall every year the bottom 4 sides, even in a 12 team comp, struggled to get enough talent to be a finals contender. All clubs had their own recruiting zone. I would suspect it is the quality of the club scouts and recruiting managers and the type of player the coach wants. Every year in the 60's every club said they unearthed a March champion from the bush. Then Carlton always had a good team because they had a big cheque book and were masters at manipulating the Form 4 system.
That a lot of Melbourne clubs don't snare good NSW and QLD players is probably because they are lazy recruiters.
And another thing. What is stopping other clubs from taking any player from our academy after we have had our pick.Comment

I don't think the footy world is too troubled by the Qld and NSW academies. NSW produces so few players that any increase from the country's most populous state would be welcomed. When it starts turning out several A-grade players each year I'm sure the rules will be rejigged, but that's some way off.
But that was a big insult from Maguire to all who played on Fri night and I hope that the Swans and the Tigers respond. Even if you ignore guys like Franklin and Cotchin, the Swans bottom six includes Zac Jones, Jake Lloyd, Laidler, Brandon Jack and Tommy D. Those are all AFL-level players now or in the future, no question. The man who laughs has not yet heard the terrible newsComment

This whole McGuire fuss is over one player (Heeney). McGuire would not care otherwise.
Perris was not a top 10 and neither is Davis likely to be a top 10.
If McGuire rates Heeney so highly he can do the following things:
- Offer Heeney a 12 year, 16 million contract at the end of Heeney's second year on the Swans list.
- Offer the Swans Ben Reid, Scott Pendlbary, Jarrod Witts and Dwayne Beams in exchange.
That should settle the argument. Nothing good comes for free!Comment

Confirmation received: Within the first couple of minutes of Ed and Derms Big Week in Footy on Fox Footy, Eddie launched into the Academy system and accused the Swans of rorting the salary cap. Disgusting.Comment

The combined ignorance and self-interest from those quotes from Eddie are breathtaking. We all know the reasons why NSW and Qld have academies, and it's a fantastic initiative that was long overdue. Leaving the numbers who make it to the AFL aside, the knock on effect at local level is immense. Kids who are getting expert training from the Swans, Giants, Suns or Lions are playing their club footy at a much higher level, which improves the level of junior players across the board. Eventually, this may mean a much higher standard of junior players coming through, which helps ALL AFL clubs.Today's a draft of your epitaphComment
