    Grand Final Replay entertainment

Well it is about now that the AFL have realised that the fans are very peeved about the drawn result. So they will fill the MCG with "real" supporters next week instead of the corporate world.

Pre-game entertainment was quite poor today so I thought for next week they could arrange the following:

    Matt Preston wearing his Elvis jumpsuit, takes on the World Record for the number of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches eaten in the shortest period of time;

George to wear his traditional Greek costume and do a version of Zorba the Greek.

Gary runs a mini Masterchef challenge with the 7 commentators. Will Bruce say "special" when he serves up his meals?

    We can't wait..........
In memory of my little Staffy - Dicey, 17.06.2005 to 1.12.2011- I'll miss you mate.

They've just interviewed Gillon McLachlan on SEN who said that there will be more tickets available to competing club members.

Draft camp will remain as scheduled, trade week may be postponed a week, but still to be determined.

    I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

It would obviously be rather strange to be involved with, but I really like that you replay drawn Grand Finals.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

        I love the drawn GF.

Sure, just play extra time if needed next week - but I love the idea of the GF replay - it's brilliant. I don't really know why people get upset - I would just be pumped for the following week.

It now feels like the efforts of the players are now irrelevant. It's bull@@@@.

And supporters went through 2 hours of nail biting agony today and that is also out the window.

There are no positives to come out of a drawn grand final, none at all - that game deserved to be decided on the day. For the players, coaching staff, spectators, media - the only winner is the AFL who gets the $$$. Of course people will watch the replay because we want to know the outcome, but it's just so disappointing after such a fantastic finish.

So do I. The players have to live with themselves over the next week, the what if's and the maybes, and if they try to shut them out I'm sure a helpful member of the public will remind them. It is Melbourne, after all. So there's the mental test.

But that's second to the big one. A game of Aussie Rules at the AFL level runs for 80 minutes. Doesn't matter if you've got all the momentum in the dying minutes but don't get over the line (West Coast 2005, many many others too) because when the siren goes, that's it. If you can't win it in 80 minutes of play (120 minutes all up), you don't deserve it. Niether team won, so play it again, Sam.

Also, the idea of a penalty shoot-out or extra time is horrendous. Before the penalty shoot-out in Soccer, matches that ended in a draw were decided by tossing a coin. Imagine losing a World Cup by a toss of a coin. Horrible. If it was a shoot out should Collingwood get two shots for every one St Kilda gets? After all, they won the I50 count 68-35, so if you want to make it "fair" surely that's what you would do. Extra-time is only used by the AFL because it is detrimental (read: unfair) to the other competing teams in the finals to have an extra week off/play an extra week. If it's the last two teams (Grand Final) this is not relevant. As I said above, the game goes for 80 minutes, be it home and away or the Big One. Win it in that time or don't win it at all. And that's fair.

You lost me when you said that Collingwood should get two shots for every Saints one just because they had almost double the inside 50s. That ignores the great work that the Saints defence did all day in countering the amount of ball coming in. (Collingwood would probably miss their extra shots anyway )

Extra time works for me because we have the same 44 players out there, fighting out the same game, under the same intense conditions that the preceding 4 quarters were played under. Next week I doubt we will have the same players and it will be a real anticlimax if one side thrashes the other. Playing out the game in extra time gives one side an opportunity to win the game via their performance, a chance for another grand final hero to emerge.

Penalty shootouts should not be grouped into the same category as extra time.

I think for AFL, there would be no need to resort to something like a penalty shoot-out (I'm not actually sure how such a thing would work in AFL - take turns to shoot at goal from the 50m line?) - because it is faster scoring than in soccer, you could play two 5-minute periods of extra time, and if still deadlocked then play a period of golden goal, or even golden point.

If there is still no winner after say, half an hour of golden point (just an illustration only, bearing in mind that this would be on top of the two initial 5-minute periods of extra time, and it would be extremely unlikely that neither team could manage to score in that period of time), maybe THEN come back next week as both teams would have had ample opportunity to get a result on the day. See no reason why we can't at least have extra time on grand final day.

I just said on another thread that I hope the corporates don't get a look in.

All tickets should be offered to the competing clubs; and all money collected should be doled out to some of the smaller charities.
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

Schneids played well and so did Dempster. Jolly was a bit average I thought.

Would have been an expensive exercise if we'd had to do another Victorian trip the next week in 2005 or 2006; paying for game tickets, travel etc all over again.
