Swans may lose Kennelly again

As was pointed out earlier, we invest emotion into our club for no real material return, whereas players invest their bodies and their time (and their future health looking at the latest reports on rplacements, reconstrudtions and removals around joints), but ultimately it is JUST a job, and as in any other job or career these days, you go where the best deal that suits your needs is. Both those guys did that, and I don't think we really have any right to bear grudges.

Although you are correct, it does go against having a "bloods culture". The players do get rewarded for their job, they don't play for a packet of fags and a case of beer as they used to decades ago. If you want material return on emotional investment you can always bet on games. Players can't buy a premiership they have to win one and watching players crying on a losing team on Grand Final day does show that the players do invest emotionally into the outcome.

Kenelley was given an opportunity to play back in Ireland to fulfill his dream and then given another opportunity to come back to the Swans and take a place on the list. I would expect that it would only be respectful of him to tell the Club before draft day that he was not returning and not drag this whole thing out to February like he did last time and leave the Club minus a player for the season.

But whatever he does, lets not forget the massive effort he made to leave his home, family, footy club and a game he loved to try his luck in Sydney and to be part of history 72 years in the making.

Good luck to him whatever he decides to do. It's his life and he's getting towards the end of his career. The pull of home must be pretty hard for him especially coming from such a close-knit family and community. He's put his body on the line for us for a number of years and has been a great player and personality for the team, and for all that he owes us zip.

Plus I don't see where his 'put down' of the Swans is in that article......

The interview he did on Irish TV last year saying how much more playing for Kerry meant to him than his time with the Swans was simply offensive.

You must be easily offended.

It is easy to see how playing for the team that his father played for would mean more to him than playing for the Swans. Especially given that his Father died whilst he was here in Australia. Plus the fact he always wanted to win an all-Ireland title.

If this article is accurate, Tadgh doesn't seem happy either living in Ireland or Australia.

I was not disappointed that he made the very personal decision in 2008 to go back to Ireland.

I will however be disappointed if he chooses to go back in 2010 so soon after returning to Australia. And from a financially secure position, he would be mad to go back to Ireland so soon, where his body is still relatively young, and where in Australia he can effectively in the next couple of years build up a form of superannuation.

Swansrob, you are quite right. Notwithstanding that the unofficial position that Kennelly was leaving Sydney for Ireland in the latter weeks of the year 2008, the official announcement was made on 7th January 2009.

Didn't he waffle on somewhere, either newspaper article or in that sad excuse for a book, that he had achieved his childhood dream and was now clear in his mind to give his all to the Swans for the remainder of his playing days, or words to that effect anyway.....

I thought Kennelly signed a two year contract with Swans. I hope he comes back and hope the story is a beat up but also if he is going to stay give us a chance in the draft and maybe we could of known earlier and maybe hung on to one of our players.
Personally I hope he comes back he brings a lot with him in his playing. Also thought he might hang around and do some coaching.
I think he gets caught up emotionally when in Ireland.

Gotta say when I heard the headline this morning of "swans player threatens to walk out on club" , i was more concerned that it was going to be someone like Maleceski or even lewis johnstone or dan currie. That to me would have suggested an internal problem but Tadgh to me isnt that important a cog going forward and has differnet motivations. We all feel comfortable going home to where we grew up and it would play on your mind. He is definiterly in the best 22 but just not that big a loss in my eyes. Good luck to him in whatever he chooses but he should do the right thing and do it before the draft if that is his choice.

Shaw Has the run but simply doesn't have the footskills
Malceski Has the footskills but doesn't have the pace
Everitt Not sure what he can do as I didn't watch Williamstown this year
Grundy Will probably play on key forwards so won't be able to provide that run
Bolton Has never played the attacking hbf role and is unlikely to in the twilight of his career

I seriously doubt that he will return to Ireland permanently over summer, but anyone who doesn't think it will pose a problem for us is kidding themselves. Just watch a few tapes of the 2009 season and you will see how we struggled with the transition out of half back into the forward 50.

If he does go and we want a like for like replacement, Gary Rohan is the man IMO. Hasn't got the consistency in the 50 metre bullets that Tadgh has, but is similar in his style with his pace and ability to take on the opposition

WS - I think the problems in 2009 were more fundamental than missing Tadhg. Kids not ready to step up and older players not ready to step down, plus Baz in rehab, whatever. And didn't Shaw achieve more metres gained than any other player in the comp? (I think I read that somewhere - and his 2nd in the B&F suggests the coaches thought he did a better job than "Has the run but simply doesn't have the footskills ".

But would like to see Rohan find a spot and make it his.
