All true points GS, although I question Shaw's effectiveness in that role* simply because his disposal and decision making isn't as good as Tadgh's. He may have gained the metres but I'd be interested to see the efficiency of his disposals. If we could somehow combine Malceski's kicking with Rhys' run then you'd have a good replacement for Tadgh.
*I'm not suggesting that Shaw was bad in that role, just that he wasn't as good as Tadgh
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun. Blessedare the cracked for they are the ones who let in the light.

Shaw is infinitely better than Tadhg in a tagging/shut down role though. While some of Shaw's disposals went astray, some of the goals that Tadhg let go were crucial. And I'd like everyone on the team (including Tadhg) to kick as well as Mal at his best.
I seriously doubt that he will return to Ireland permanently over summer, but anyone who doesn't think it will pose a problem for us is kidding themselves. Just watch a few tapes of the 2009 season and you will see how we struggled with the transition out of half back into the forward 50.
If he does go and we want a like for like replacement, Gary Rohan is the man IMO. Hasn't got the consistency in the 50 metre bullets that Tadgh has, but is similar in his style with his pace and ability to take on the opposition
I'm with you Will - Tadhg's critical for us as he's the least predictable of our running HBs, more prepared to take risks and more likely to straighten us up thru the middle. All essential skills in the new AFL world of zone defences.
Come on people, he is contracted for 2011 and he makes no actual reference to the year he is talking about when he makes the comments.
He signed for two years on his return and he had every right to come back to Australia and play out 2011 and then make a decision then on what he wants to do going forward.
From all reports he came back on a vastly reduced wage in 2010 (and so he should have) so it would not surprise me to hear a number of comments like this during 2011 in the leadup to a new contract at the end of next year if he wants to play on.

It's not 1988 anymore, Tadhg doesn't play a shut down role. His job is to provide run from half back and set up attacks, I think you'll find he actually has a defensive forward play on him most of the time.
Lock down defenders are a dime a dozen and their role in the modern game is starting to become redundant, have a look at the Pies backline as an example of this, all of them have attacking facets to their game (Presti excluded).
I also think that Shaw's brainfades cost us more goals than Tadhg's defending, just watch the Hawks game at the MCG this year if you want to see a prime example

Pretty tough blaming Shaw for the Hawks loss! IIRC, there was a dual Brownlow medalist that was pretty @@@@e that day and he wasn't Robinson Crusoe!
We can all find games where this player or that player was a leading hand in a loss. As I said previously, if this article is to be believed we're best to be shod of him.
At least Shaw doesn't squawk on about going home to Melbourne all the time
I suspect that Tadhg's return was largely financially motivated - the global financial crisis hit Ireland early and very badly.
Watching his play in the International Rules confirmed what I have thought for some time now - that he'd be better up forward than down back. It was like watching a different person playing.
As much as I enjoy Tadhg as a person, I'm happy for him to go home and stay where his heart is.
Lots of gun jumping going on here. And he came back here because he could get warm in Sydney.....have you seen the gear most of the boys are training in? Poor ole Macca's head will not see the light of day until he gets back to Sydney.....The cold mists that flowed from their mouths during the game? No wonder he came back.
If you've never jumped from one couch to the other to save yourself from lava then you didn't have a childhood
Coach John Longmire has spoken to Kennelly in Ireland overnight. Longmire said Kennelly assured him he would be back in Sydney for pre-season training and is looking forward to playing with the Swans in 2011.
