Who knows? the dogs were obviously scouting Vez during the season so they probably do have some footage of his games this year.

Even if he didnt he has played on him previously in a game where he had 17 possessions and five scoring shots so he would have been in a pretty good position to assess his level of talent.

But I'm sure you know better than a bloke who has had 10 seasons at AFL senior level as well as another bloke who played with Vez for 2 of his 3 seasons

Completely irrelevant whether I think I know better than Gilbee or Hall. They are not questioning my judgement as to why I didn't pick him for the senior team this year. They are questioning the judgement of Paul Roos, John Longmire, Frosty McPherson, Stewy Dew, John Blakey and Peter Berbakov. All of whom I am sure spent far more time watching and monitoring Vez' playing time and training efforts, and all of whom had far more information at their fingertips re his physical shape, than either Messrs Hall or Gilbee.

I respect Liz and think that she is a great poster but I just can't agree on this point. All she is doing is following Roos and co blindly assuming that coaching panels don't make mistakes.

An prime example would be Clarkson and co at the Hawks not rating Benny and Josh in their best 22 when they clearly would have been in 2010. I predict that we'll find ourselves in the same predicament with Vez in 2011

I think Vez might yet become an exceptional player, if he can do something about his endurance. I am disappointed that he hasn't made it at Sydney (I've been a fan since the first time I saw him play, in a pre-season reserves game at Bus Stop Oval, in 2008). I acknowledge it may be a trade that we rue in years to come (though I am far from certain that we will).

However, I thought this discussion was about Gilbee's comment that he was dumbfounded that Vez wasn't in the senior team this year. I may not have one iota of the extensive footy knowledge and nous of Messrs Gilbee and Hall but I did watch every single one of Vez' Sydney-located reserves games and one Canberra game in 2010. Having done so, I am able to exercise a smidgeon of independent thought to hold the view that the combined Swans coaching panel were being neither stupid nor vindictive by not selecting Vez in their 2010 senior team on a regular basis.

Clearly you haven't been paying attention. It's always the coaching panel's fault when a player can't get a game - never the player's. And anyone leaving the Swans is always a disaster unless popular opinion has it that they may have once been legends but are now hacks.

Back in the real world, I can't think of any of the coaching panel ever being as open and honest as Stewie Dew was when asked about Vez at an aftermatch. If that rocket wasn't enough to get him going, I'm not sure even changing teams will do it.

But like Liz I really hope he makes it. Vez has so much talent and it would be sad if it went to waste. But these days it's good if a player can run around a bit, too - preferably for most of a game. And he certainly wasn't showing much character at the B&F - he reminded me of Nick Davis but without the wicked sense of humour.

Vez was a favourite of mine from the first time I saw him, but last year he just wasn't cutting the mustard and I suspected he would be gone.
It drives me nuts the way so many posters on here are so quick to doubt the coaching panel without even a smidgeon of the information they have at their disposal. I battle to think of any player that we have released in the last five or so years that have gone on to bigger and better things. I know a lot of you will immediately name Schneider but I really don't think he's any different at the Saints than he was with us - on his day, a game winner who often drifts out of a game and a rather unreliable shot at goal.
