I too still get goosebumps and constricted breathing when I watch the most thrilling quarter of football I have ever seen, an emotional intensity even the GF replay doesn't provide. But I don't think I would feel so strongly if we had lost the GF. The response is heightened by the knowledge of what it made possible.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

It was thrilling, but I still think the last quarter of the 1996 final against Essendon when Lockett kicked a point to get us into the GF was the best. The noise from the crowd was unbelievable. Pity we lost the next week :-(

I'm with you there Erica. No question Davis' heroics were incredible and the last quarter as everyone has mentioned was spine tingling stuff but Lockett's effort was simply amazing. He had an injured groin and hadn't kicked over 30metres in training so to kick the ball 55metres with everything riding on the kick was magical stuff.

As Wardy stated this club has given us some wonderful memories over the years.

I missed Plugger's point but he only had to kick a point. I was hanging off my friends screaming "THERE'S NO TIME!" when Nick kicked the miracle goal. The rare event of the SCG on a Friday night, the dullness of the first three quarters, the momentum as the Swans (starting with Luke Ablett) moved the ball forward, Baz just getting a boot to it, ROK and Crouch nearly finding space, the unbelievable pile of bodies from both teams and then the tap and goal. I'm so glad that the tap was Ball's, not Jolly's. I've never heard a noise like the next 20 seconds. 30,000 people roaring and hugging and kissing. Fox Studios was like NYE for the next four hours.

And it led to the Flag. Plugger's point really led to more disappointment. The amazing game we couldn't win against the Saints (watching our game on the giant screen at Grant Thomas' place, sure they could beat either exhausted team the following week) and the pure, pure joy of the GF weekend in Melbourne.

GS, I was there and I can tell you the atmosphere was every bit like the Geelong game It will always be special to me because this victory came after many years of being complete crap and being close to extinction and as a result the celebrations we're enormous.

Also please don't downgrade Pluggers effort because all he had to do was kick a point. It was incredible that he made the distance with the injury and on tired legs. Also what happened the next week is immaterial to that incredible moment. I don't look less fondly on the TDL tackle this year because we lost the next week.

Can't agree there, Big Al. I wasn't present at either, watched both on TV. And while I still think Plugger's effort was wonderful in its own right, it gains lustre from the historical context, as you point out. I bought a copy of the game on the strength of that moment.
Nick's effort in that quarter was, for me, even more electrifying, and while I beam watching Lockett's kick, I choke up at the cumulative series of jolts applied by Nicky D.
But of course we'll all have our own favourites. The wonderful thing is we have so many to choose from.

Actually I can relate to Al's comment. I was there. And I learned a thing or two. One of which is that I could stand on a seat (the nuns would have been horrified), scream and scream, and not feel like a hoon. The other is that there would have been no point, if not for Chappy's decision to kick it to Plugger. It was a brilliant moment. BUT

The whole last quarter in 2005 was simply outstanding, so many of them involved to get the ball to Nick, including the massive efforts of Peb and Jude, and the class of Ball, and the No Quarter Given attitude of Kirky. Tips it over the edge for me.

Yep to add to these unbelievable moments of nick davis, plugger etc....as a team sense that last qtr against the saints in that 05 PF was simply outstanding, the arrogance of some saints supporters sitting near me talking about where they buy GF tickets at 3qtr time, oh the joy to see the look on their faces as we piled on goal after goal to sink them was fantastic!....it all just added to a remarkable year.

I had a group of Saints supporters in the bay next to mine do exactly the same thing. I'm usually a gracious winner but even I pointed out the exits to them as they trudged out early. Was a great feeling leaving the ground that night. I caught the early morning flight back to sydney the next morning to line up in the best queue ever. Great memories!!

Aussie Ange and I had a plan (we sent Tammy home - we didnt want the soon to be born child put under any further stress - The Geelong game nearly brought young Zac into the world a little early!) - we were watching that game at the Fox & Lion - the plan was Ange would run around to the members gate and get our spot - I would bring the car around with the chairs blankets, wine etc - we were about 20th in line! I even talked the policeman into letting us park right out the front of the SCG otherwise we would have been towed away (pissed off the tow truck driver though!) and then I was sent home as I was sick, but Ange stood up to the challenge!!! Its a shame that we cant do it that way now - it was great fun.

In 96 we were in Bay 1 and the crowd went nuts - even the oldies behind the goals ran onto the field - and the bombers cheer squad who only minutes earlier had given the Swans faithful such a hard time were all crying into their beers after the lovely Plugger kicked the point.- such a shame!NOT!!!
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure..................

When I got to the queue I was back past the Hordern Pavilion but everyone was so happy that it didn't really matter how long the queue was. The next day my Wests Tigers beat the Broncos at the SFS on the way to the premiership so it was an amazing weekend.

I swear the Brewongle shifted on it's foundations in 1996 with everyone jumping up and down and hugging. Fair to say a few beverages were consumed that night.
