    Training Day(s) Question

A question for the wise amongst us (i.e. everyone else but me): What sort of etiquette (if any) exists for watching Swans' training sessions? My morning commute to work goes quite literally right past the SCG and I see them out there doing their stuff metres from my bus window, and every time I battle the urge to disembark and watch for a while.

Does one just stand on the other side of the fence or wherever and observe, or is there a special spot? Can one cheer them on a bit and/or interact, or should one be seen (if at all) and not heard? Not that I'm about to rush onto the practice ground, or interrupt, or anything.

I just figure heck, if the opportunity is right at my feet every morning, I ought to take it. Work can wait for an hour or to (esp. as everyone's still away on break except me and a handful of others!).

I've stumbled upon the Tigers training once and there were a number of people just hanging out by the fence watching, chatting to players as they came off the training track etc. I assume Swans training is the same. The only time I imagine it being any different is a closed session, which you'd unlikely be able to see from your bus.

While they are training at Bus Stop Oval (and therefore, by definition, in public) I don't think there is any problem with standing on the edge of the oval to watch. I haven't done it often but certainly have done so, and there are usually a few people loitering around.

When the cricket is over and they resume use of the SCG, there is normally one nominated public session a week. For this you have to enter through the trust services office in the gold car park. You can just walk up to the desk, explain you've come to watch the Swans train, sign the visitors book and they will let you through.

And that's exactly how the Swans training at Lakeside goes.

They're very friendly, some players will even have a chat with you about their progress if you approach them nicely.

Its time to get off the bus Yuri, and hang over the fence.

If its open, then its open. Chat to your fellow fence hangers. Cheering the boys on as they go around the track is a little OTT (make that a LOT), but its no big deal if you choose to make your way around to the Driver Ave side and occasionally chat when they are open to it. Most of the kids are very shy and need a bit of encouragement to talk (one exception comes to mind, but I digress), as are some of the older players, which I found surprising, but there you go.

Nothing wrong with watching the boys train once in a while. Especially leading into the season when they're likely to be putting together a few scratch matches. Almost a game but with two sides you can barrack for!

Wrong would be hanging around the players when you see them out and they're not on club business. Or sitting behind them when they're at lunch so you can eavesdrop on their conversations. That would be wrong. What sort of Sicko would do that?

Guys, when we ran a big training session prior to Xmas, I invited everyone down to watch and no one came! Yes please do come down. It makes the lads work harder and know that they are there for you guys.

I'll keep posting the types of exercises the lads are doing on my Twitter page, so if you want to know what I get them doing in the gym join me: http://twitter.com/#!/RealCommando

                    Me, given half the chance.
Besides, they would never suspect. I don't look like a predator or a reporter, or even some girl's mother!

Almost every Mon Wed And Fri from 9am at Lakeside. You can always call the club the day before to verify.
Once they can get onto the SCG itself, the times vary a bit more, but the website last year told us of open training sessions there. And I hope that is to continue this season.

Anything short of laying a crunching shirtfront on an unsuspecting Dan Hanneberry should be considered acceptable at training. I went to the scratch match they had about this time last year, was loadsa fun especially since it was them not me running around in 30 degree heat and 90% humidity.

A couple of times I've been the only visitor at Lakeside training, everyone looked puzzled to see me (perhaps they thought I was lost) Kenny very kindly made me welcome & invited me to sit in the bus-shelter thingy, but I was too embarassed! I'm not used to being the only one at training as I started my footy following in Geelong a long time ago.
